Staying in Benin

Benin (BJ), formerly Dahomey, is a West African gem known for its rich history, vibrant Vodun culture, and warm hospitality. Cotonou serves as the economic hub and seat of government, featuring bustling markets and colonial architecture, while Porto-Novo remains the official capital. Accommodations are primarily concentrated along the southern coastline, making city-based travel the norm rather than resort-style isolation. The country’s French colonial heritage is evident in its language and infrastructure, offering a familiar yet distinct experience for international travelers. With a population of approximately 13 million spread across 112,622 km², Benin offers diverse landscapes from the Bight of Benin beaches to the northern savannas. Travelers often base themselves in Cotonou for business and cultural exploration, with day trips to Ouidah for historical sites or Abomey for royal palaces. The blend of Christianity, Islam, and traditional beliefs creates a unique social fabric. For frequent flyers, the region provides a compelling mix of business connectivity and cultural depth, though infrastructure outside major hubs remains developing.

Entry & getting around

Entry & Getting Around

The primary international gateway is Cadjehoun Airport (COO) in Cotonou, offering connections to key West African hubs and select European cities. Domestic transport relies heavily on road networks linking neighboring countries like Nigeria and Togo. While specific visa requirements vary, travelers should verify entry rules with the relevant consulate, as e-visas or visas on arrival may be available for many nationalities. Internal movement is best managed via hired taxis or private drivers, as public long-distance buses connect major urban centers but can be unpredictable. Road conditions vary, so planning travel times accordingly is essential.

Accommodation Layout: City-Centric

Benin's hotel industry is highly concentrated in southern coastal cities, particularly Cotonou and Porto-Novo. Cotonou hosts the majority of international brand flags and upscale business hotels, catering to trade and conference needs. Northern regions, including areas near Niamey (though technically Niger, bordering Benin) or Abomey, lack large international chains, relying instead on local boutique accommodations. Resort-style hotels are scarce; travelers typically use urban centers as bases for exploring the country's cultural and historical sites. This city-centric model means business travelers will find robust amenities in Cotonou, while leisure seekers should plan for shorter stays in remote areas.

Loyalty Landscape

Major global chains like Marriott and Hilton have a strong footprint in Cotonou, offering standard points earning and redemption opportunities. Due to the relatively small market size, coverage by other international brands is limited. Some local high-end hotels may not directly participate in global loyalty programs but often offer indirect benefits through partnerships. Travelers holding elite status with Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors are advised to prioritize their respective properties in Cotonou to ensure consistent service standards and point accrual. The loyalty landscape is dominated by these two groups, with fewer options for alternative program members.

Trip preparation

Health

Reference only, not medical advice. Benin is hot, humid and low-lying, so altitude is not a normal issue; plan for heat, sun and dehydration. Use treated/bottled water, eat food served hot, and be cautious with raw foods. Malaria risk is countrywide; dengue and other bite-borne illnesses also occur, so use repellents, covered clothing and screened/AC rooms. Avoid swimming or wading in freshwater because schistosomiasis is present.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. Be up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, polio, flu, varicella, Tdap and COVID-19. CDC recommends hepatitis A, hepatitis B and typhoid for many travelers. Yellow fever vaccine is recommended and Benin requires proof of yellow-fever vaccination for arriving travelers aged 9 months or older. Discuss malaria prevention, a possible polio booster, meningococcal vaccine for dry-season travel in the meningitis belt, and rabies vaccine based on activities and access to care.

eSIM / connectivity

Local connectivity is mainly via mobile networks MTN Benin, Moov Africa Benin and Celtiis. Local carrier eSIM support is not widely advertised as a standard tourist option; many visitors should expect to use a registered physical prepaid SIM/data bundle from an official shop or airport/city outlet. International travel eSIMs are available for Benin through roaming partners, but check which local network they use and coverage outside Cotonou.
