Health
Reference only, not medical advice. Benin is hot, humid and low-lying, so altitude is not a normal issue; plan for heat, sun and dehydration. Use treated/bottled water, eat food served hot, and be cautious with raw foods. Malaria risk is countrywide; dengue and other bite-borne illnesses also occur, so use repellents, covered clothing and screened/AC rooms. Avoid swimming or wading in freshwater because schistosomiasis is present.
Vaccinations
Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. Be up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, polio, flu, varicella, Tdap and COVID-19. CDC recommends hepatitis A, hepatitis B and typhoid for many travelers. Yellow fever vaccine is recommended and Benin requires proof of yellow-fever vaccination for arriving travelers aged 9 months or older. Discuss malaria prevention, a possible polio booster, meningococcal vaccine for dry-season travel in the meningitis belt, and rabies vaccine based on activities and access to care.
eSIM / connectivity
Local connectivity is mainly via mobile networks MTN Benin, Moov Africa Benin and Celtiis. Local carrier eSIM support is not widely advertised as a standard tourist option; many visitors should expect to use a registered physical prepaid SIM/data bundle from an official shop or airport/city outlet. International travel eSIMs are available for Benin through roaming partners, but check which local network they use and coverage outside Cotonou.
