Staying in Antigua and Barbuda

Antigua and Barbuda is one of the smallest countries in the Caribbean, comprising the main islands of Antigua and Barbuda along with dozens of smaller islets. For frequent-flyer hotel travelers, this archipelago offers a distinct blend of urban convenience and secluded island charm. The country features a tropical savanna climate, with the majority of the population residing in the Central Plain stretching from the capital, St. John's, to English Harbour. While St. John's serves as the primary hub, the single settlement of Codrington on Barbuda provides a quieter alternative. Accommodation strategies here differ from larger destinations. Travelers often base themselves in St. John's for business or cultural exploration, or opt for resorts in the southwest where pockets of tropical monsoon climate exist. The country is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Caribbean Sea to the west, sharing maritime borders with Anguilla, Saint Barthélemy, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat, and Guadeloupe. Despite its small size of 440 km², the nation retains large swathes of undeveloped land and natural parks, such as Codrington Lagoon. Visitors should note that the country has faced environmental issues due to climate change, which may affect certain coastal areas. Historically settled by Hunter-gatherers and later colonized by the British in 1632, the islands offer a rich heritage dating back to independence in 1981. For hotel stays, the focus is generally on leveraging the central infrastructure between St. John's and English Harbour, with limited but distinct options on the sister island of Barbuda.

Entry & getting around

Entry & Getting Around

The primary international gateway is V.C. Bird International Airport. Domestic transport is primarily road-based, connecting major settlements on Antigua such as St. John's, All Saints, and Bolans. Access to Barbuda requires a short flight or ferry ride to its sole settlement, Codrington. Given the country's small size and flat terrain, inter-regional travel is relatively straightforward. Regarding entry requirements, travelers must check with the local consulate for the most current visa regulations, as policies are subject to change.

Where to Base

Hotel travel is best centered on Antigua. The capital, St. John's, is the most populated city and serves as the hub for business and cultural activities. Most residents live in the Central Plain stretching from St. John's to English Harbour, an area offering greater accommodation variety and infrastructure. In contrast, Barbuda has only one settlement, Codrington, making it suitable for travelers seeking extreme tranquility and nature exploration. Note that pockets of tropical monsoon climate in the southwest of Antigua may influence resort selection in those specific coastal zones.

Loyalty Landscape

As a former British colony, the hotel market in Antigua and Barbuda is heavily influenced by international chains. Major global loyalty programs such as Marriott, Hilton, and IHG have a significant footprint, particularly in key tourist areas like St. John's and English Harbour. Due to the country's small scale, local independent boutiques and small resorts also hold a place, but international chains typically offer broader coverage for standardized services and point redemptions. Travelers should monitor specific promotions and member benefits these major programs offer in the Caribbean region.

Trip preparation

Health

Use normal Caribbean precautions: eat freshly cooked food, wash hands, and use bottled/treated water if supply is uncertain. Prevent mosquito bites; dengue and Zika are noted risks. Antigua and Barbuda is low-lying, so altitude is not a concern; heat, sun, dehydration, swimming/boating safety and hurricane-season weather matter.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor/travel clinic at least a month before travel. Be up to date on routine vaccines, MMR and COVID-19. CDC recommends hepatitis A and B for unvaccinated travelers, typhoid for most travelers, and rabies only for exposure/access-risk cases. Yellow-fever vaccine is not recommended, but a certificate is required from yellow-fever-risk countries, including >12-hour transit; not required for direct U.S. travel.

eSIM / connectivity

Connectivity is generally good in populated/tourist areas. Main mobile networks are Digicel, FLOW and APUA/inet. Third-party travel eSIMs commonly cover Antigua and Barbuda; local prepaid SIM/data can be bought from carrier shops, but local carrier eSIM/tourist data availability should be confirmed before arrival, especially for Barbuda coverage.

Health/vaccine info is reference only, not medical advice — consult a doctor or travel clinic; defer to CDC/WHO and official sources (as of 2026-06-20).
