Jose Maria Cordova International Airport MDESKRG

José María Córdova International Airport (MDE) is Medellín’s main international airport, located in Rionegro rather than in the city itself. It is the key airport for Antioquia and handles Medellín’s trunk domestic routes plus most international service; the smaller in-town Olaya Herrera airport (EOH) is mainly regional/domestic. MDE is not a major global alliance hub, but Avianca has a strong presence here and Star Alliance coverage is visible through Avianca, Copa and United; LATAM, JetSMART, Wingo, American, JetBlue, Aeroméxico, Air Europa and others round out a mixed regional/international network. Viva used to be an important MDE low-cost base, but it ceased operations in 2023. The airport is compact by hub standards, so frequent flyers should think of it as an origin/destination airport with some useful connections, not as a purpose-built mega-connector.
