Honolulu International Airport HNLPHNL
Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) is Hawaii’s main air gateway: a large Honolulu airport linking Oahu with the neighbor islands, the U.S. mainland and key Asia-Pacific markets. It is the core Honolulu operation for the Hawaiian/Alaska group, now relevant to oneworld frequent flyers, while Terminal 2 also hosts major U.S. and international carriers across Star Alliance, SkyTeam and oneworld. For transit passengers, the practical story is simple: Terminal 1 is mainly Hawaiian-branded flights, Terminal 2 is most other domestic and international service and handles international arrivals, and Terminal 3 is Mokulele. Terminals 1 and 2 are connected airside, but some walks involve USDA agricultural screening; the free Wiki Wiki shuttle links gates and terminals, with broader terminal shuttle service also available landside. For the city, taxi or rideshare is usually the most efficient with luggage: roughly 15-25 minutes to Downtown Honolulu in normal traffic, longer to Waikiki. Public transport is viable via the airport Skyline station and TheBus/W Line, especially if your bags fit transit rules. HNL has no true airside transit hotel, so long layovers are best spent using lounges, gardens, art areas, or leaving the airport if your immigration, baggage and reconnection buffer is generous.
