Helsinki Airport (Helsinki-Vantaa Airport) HELEFHK
Helsinki Airport (HEL), also known as Helsinki-Vantaa, is Finland’s main international gateway and the home hub for Finnair, with Nordic Regional Airlines/Norra feeding many domestic and regional routes. For frequent flyers it is most useful as a compact Oneworld transfer point between Finland, the Nordics, Europe and selected long-haul markets in Asia, North America and the Middle East. Its Europe-Asia role is still important but less dominant than before Russia’s airspace closure changed many northern routings. The airport now runs as one terminal under one roof: Schengen and domestic flights generally use gates 5-36, while long-haul and other non-Schengen flights use gates 37-55. Transfers are normally walkable, with passport control and sometimes security depending on route. The city link is straightforward: P and I trains run from the station directly under the terminal to central Helsinki in about 30 minutes; buses are slower at roughly 40-50 minutes. For layovers, the airport works well for short protected connections, but self-connectors should leave extra time for baggage, check-in and security. Longer layovers can justify a train trip into Helsinki, while overnight or rest-focused travelers have landside airport hotels and airside/terminal rest options. Lounges are strongest for Finnair and Oneworld passengers, with Finnair lounges in both Schengen and non-Schengen areas; third-party lounge access such as Priority Pass or DragonPass depends on the current participating lounge and capacity.
