Dunhuang Mogao International Airport (DNH) is best understood as a tourism-oriented regional airport for Dunhuang, the Mogao Caves and western Gansu, not as a major hub. It is not a hub for a global airline alliance or a major Chinese carrier. Although it was renamed an international airport in 2020 and has a dedicated international terminal, the practical passenger flow is still mainly domestic and seasonal. The airport is compact: Terminal 3 handles domestic flights, while Terminal 2 is used for international passengers. For most visitors, a taxi or pre-arranged hotel pickup is the simplest way into Dunhuang city, about 12.7 km away and typically around 20-30 minutes depending on traffic and hotel location. Treat DNH as an origin/destination airport rather than a connection airport: schedules can be seasonal, published minimum connection times are not the main planning tool here, and self-connections should leave generous time to collect bags and clear security again.
