Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH) is Greece’s primary international gateway and the main Athens base for Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air, with Star Alliance especially visible because of Aegean. SKY express and Ryanair are also important operators. For frequent flyers, ATH is less a mega-hub than a strong regional and leisure-traffic connector: it links Athens with Greek domestic points and islands, a broad European network, the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East, plus selected long-haul services such as North America. The airport is reasonably compact, but Schengen versus non-Schengen processing, remote stands, seasonal peaks and separate-ticket low-cost connections can change how easy a transfer feels. The simplest city link is Metro Line 3 to Syntagma in roughly 40 minutes; taxis are often faster door-to-door when traffic cooperates, while airport express buses are useful late at night.
