Getting there & around

From the airport

Catania Fontanarossa (CTA) is the main airport for Siracusa. The simplest public option is the direct Interbus/Etna coach from the airport to Siracusa bus terminal, roughly 1 hr 10 min to 1 hr 30 min. Train is also possible from Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa station to Siracusa, roughly about 1 hr on direct regional trains, but allow extra time for the airport-station shuttle and schedules. Taxi/private transfer is usually about 50-70 min by road. Comiso (CIY) is a secondary option with much thinner public transport; plan a rental car or transfer, about 1 hr 30 min by road.

Around the city

Siracusa has no metro. Most first-time visitors should walk: Ortigia, the mainland bridges, the station/bus terminal area and much of Borgata are manageable on foot. Urban buses are run by SAIS; buy normal urban tickets, and use a day ticket only if you expect several bus rides. Ortigia has limited-traffic zones and tight streets, so drivers are usually better off sleeping outside Ortigia or using edge parking. For beaches, Plemmirio and some coastal stays, buses can be sparse; a car, taxi or prearranged transfer is more reliable.

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base

Ortigia Island is the top choice for hotel stays, allowing easy walking access to the Archaeological Park of Neapolis and the Duomo. The mainland area offers more modern hotel chains and better parking options for those planning day trips.

Getting Around

The historic center is best explored on foot. Buses and taxis connect Ortigia to the mainland and surrounding areas. There is no direct metro; visitors should plan airport transfers in advance as public transport links require coordination.

Best Season

Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather for exploring outdoor ruins and gardens. Summer is hot but vibrant with festivals. Winter is quieter with fewer crowds, though some archaeological sites may have reduced opening hours.
