This authentic neighbourhood institution, decked in an understated façade, has been going strong for over 30 years in a relatively little-known part of Croix Rousse. A warm vibe with a retro feel sets the scene courtesy of a Formica bar, vintage wallpaper and a quirky collection of old clocks and other paraphernalia. Chef Junzo Matsuno deftly crafts polished traditional Gallic fare, to which he may add the odd low-key Japanese twist, together with a strong focus on veggies (which he grows himself). The short, reasonably priced menu changes every month and reflects the season in fresh vegetable-forward food. All the house-made elements are skilfully crafted, from delicate ravioli dough to sorbets and fermented items.

Sit down to classic, bourgeois French cuisine: beef fillet with sauce périgourdine, chicken and veal sweetbread vol-au-vent, turbot with sauce bonne femme, savarin, millefeuille for two, cut and plated tableside… A tempting lunch set menu comes in at a lower price point to complement the high-calibre à la carte menu. The establishment serves the same wine list (around 600 wines) as the fine dining restaurant.

Her up-to-the-minute, inspired repertory unveils high-flying, delicate technique and a genuine flair for contrasts, illustrated in particular by her work with vegetables and seasonings and her knack for blending vibrant ingredients.
