Staying in Qatar

Qatar is a desert nation on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, where the capital, Doha, houses over 80% of the population. As a high-income economy driven by natural resources, the hotel landscape is heavily concentrated in Doha and its immediate surroundings, featuring a mix of luxury business and resort properties. The country lacks a domestic commercial aviation network, relying instead on international gateways and ground transportation for connectivity. Visa requirements vary and should always be verified with the relevant consulate. Major global loyalty programs, particularly Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors, have a strong footprint, offering extensive options for frequent flyers seeking consistent service and redemption opportunities.

Entry & getting around

Entry & Getting Around

Qatar has no domestic commercial flights; all travel enters via international gateways. Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Doha serves as the primary hub with connections to major cities worldwide. Ground transportation relies on taxis, ride-hailing apps, and car rentals, supported by excellent road infrastructure. Due to the small size and flat terrain, travel times from the airport to the city center or attractions are generally short, though extreme heat may limit outdoor walking.

Where to Base

The vast majority of hotels are concentrated in the capital, Doha, making it ideal for business meetings, shopping, and cultural exploration. Doha features numerous landmark luxury hotels, providing easy access to urban amenities. For leisure, resorts along the west coast offer relaxation, though options are more limited. Given the lack of dispersed regional hotel clusters, it is advisable to use Doha as your primary or sole base to radiate outwards for day trips.

Visa & Entry Requirements

Visa policies for Qatar are subject to change and depend on nationality. Many travelers may be eligible for visa-on-arrival or e-visa options, but regulations can shift. Always check the official website of the Qatari Ministry of Interior or consult the nearest Qatari consulate for the most current entry requirements before booking travel.

Loyalty Landscape

International hotel chains have a significant presence. Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors boast extensive portfolios covering various tiers from upscale business to luxury resorts. World of Hyatt and other major alliance members also provide consistent service standards. For frequent flyers, these brands offer ample points earning and redemption opportunities, particularly in Doha's core areas.

Trip preparation

Health

Reference only, not medical advice. Qatar is low-lying, so altitude is not a usual issue. Main visitor risks are intense heat/UV, dehydration, and food/water stomach upset. Use normal food-and-water hygiene, hydrate, limit midday exertion in summer, use sun protection, and prevent mosquito bites; CDC lists dengue as a bite-related risk but not malaria prophylaxis for typical travel.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least 4 weeks before travel. Be up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, polio, Tdap, flu, COVID-19 and others as appropriate. CDC recommends hepatitis A and typhoid for many travelers, hepatitis B for unvaccinated travelers, and rabies pre-exposure vaccine only for higher-risk animal exposure or limited access to care. Yellow-fever vaccine is not recommended for Qatar, but a certificate is required for travelers aged 9 months+ arriving from countries with yellow-fever transmission risk.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is widely usable on compatible unlocked phones. Qatar’s main mobile networks are Ooredoo and Vodafone Qatar; both offer prepaid connectivity and eSIM support, with visitor/tourist SIM options commonly available at Hamad International Airport and city outlets. Bring passport ID for registration and confirm your phone supports local bands/eSIM before relying on it.
