Staying in Indonesia

Indonesia is best planned as a set of hotel bases rather than a single linear itinerary. Jakarta is the main business and air-connection base, Bali concentrates beach resorts, Ubud stays and many leisure hotels, while Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Lombok, Labuan Bajo and Lake Toba work well for culture, volcanoes, diving, island-hopping and nature-led trips. International arrivals commonly route through Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta and Bali's I Gusti Ngurah Rai, with Surabaya's Juanda also serving international passengers. For domestic travel, flights are the practical backbone across the archipelago; Java adds useful intercity rail, and ferries or passenger ships connect nearby and more remote islands. For loyalty travelers, ALL - Accor Live Limitless and Marriott Bonvoy are the most practical starting points because their brand portfolios span economy-to-luxury and appear across both city and resort markets; Hilton Honors, IHG One Rewards and World of Hyatt are also relevant in selected bases, especially Bali, Jakarta, Surabaya and Bandung.

Entry & getting around

Entry & getting around

Indonesia's immigration site describes A1 visa-free entry for certain nationalities as a single-entry stay of up to 30 days with no extension, while the B1 tourism visa on arrival is for listed nationalities, starts at up to 30 days and can be extended once to a maximum 60-day stay; passport validity of at least six months and a return or onward ticket are listed requirements.

Where to base

A base-by-base plan works better than treating Indonesia as one continuous route: Jakarta for business and connections, Bali for beaches, resorts and Ubud, Yogyakarta and Surabaya for Java culture and volcano access, and Lombok, Labuan Bajo and Lake Toba for island and nature itineraries.

Loyalty landscape

For loyalty planning, start with ALL - Accor Live Limitless and Marriott Bonvoy because their portfolios cover broad price tiers. Hilton's own Indonesia directory lists participating hotels, while IHG One Rewards and World of Hyatt are useful in selected major city and resort bases.

Trip preparation

Health

Use treated/bottled water and cautious food hygiene; standards vary by island and setting. Prevent mosquito bites: dengue, chikungunya and Zika occur, and malaria risk is higher in eastern Indonesia and some rural areas, but not in Jakarta, Ubud, Bali resort areas, Java resort areas, the Gili Islands or Pulau Seribu per CDC. Avoid floodwater, muddy freshwater and swimming in untreated freshwater; schistosomiasis is present. Heat, UV and dehydration are common issues; plan shade, fluids and light clothing. Volcano/trek routes such as Rinjani or Papua highlands can involve altitude and rapidly changing weather. Avoid animal bites, especially dogs, monkeys and bats; seek urgent care after bites or scratches.

Vaccinations

Reference only: consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. Be current on routine vaccines such as MMR, Tdap, polio, influenza, varicella, shingles as age-appropriate, plus COVID-19. CDC recommends hepatitis A and hepatitis B for unvaccinated travelers; typhoid for most travelers, especially smaller cities or rural stays. Japanese encephalitis may be advised for long stays, repeated travel, rural/outdoor exposure or uncertain itineraries. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine may be considered for animal-exposure risk or remote travel. Chikungunya vaccine may be considered for extended stays. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended for Indonesia itself; a certificate is required for travelers aged 9 months or older arriving from countries with yellow-fever transmission risk.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is commonly usable in major cities and tourist areas if your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible; coverage can thin on remote islands, mountains and at sea. Telkomsel publishes SIMPATI prepaid and Halo eSIM options, and IM3/Indosat publishes eSIM plus a “Traveling to Indonesia” visitor-data page. Registration rules and documents can vary, so verify current requirements before purchase; physical tourist SIMs remain a practical fallback at airports and operator stores.

Health/vaccine info is reference only, not medical advice — consult a doctor or travel clinic; defer to CDC/WHO and official sources (as of 2026-06-20).
