Animalón

Mexican, Contemporary · ★ Michelin

$$$$

Many restaurants claim to be transporting, but how many deliver on the promise? Animalón certainly does. In season, this spot shines with an al fresco dining space under a centuries-old oak tree (during colder months, they move to a pop-up space). It's the very definition of tranquility, yet with owner Javier Plascencia at the helm, it's equally thrilling. The contemporary Mexican cuisine pulls influences from all over the country. The kitchen's vision is apparent in dishes like beer-braised barbacoa wrapped in a banana leaf, steamed and smoked in a pig's bladder, then served tableside for a dr

Damiana

Mexican, Fusion · ★ Michelin

$$$$

Nestled on the Viñedos de la Reina property, Damiana is a dream setting. Under the canopy of several large trees, generously spaced tables amid thriving garden beds create an intimate, exclusive feel. The ever-friendly Chef Esteban Lluis celebrates the bounty of the region with a seasonal, multicourse tasting menu that regularly highlights pristine seafood in a creative, contemporary way. As beautiful as they look, dishes like grilled rockfish or seafood rice are equally compelling in taste. Looking to the land, local suckling pig served with mole, tortillas and fiery salsas was another recent

Is this dinner or a party? The answer is both. Inside the Bruma Wine resort, this backyard celebration features communal tables and a buzzy crowd that never lets up. The kitchen keeps pace, delivering an eclectic Mexican menu that covers land and sea. Brimming with confidence and bravado, the rustic cooking is scaled such that sharing is essential while still delivering clear, punchy flavors. Have you ever seen cabbage grilled so fiercely? Carrots, bone marrow and warm flour tortillas make for an unexpectedly thrilling combination. Scallops with eggplant puree are a meal on their own, as is th

Taqueria La Principal

Mexican

Situated in a warehouse space with plastic furniture, this quintessential no-frills roadside taqueria doesn’t get a lot of points for ambience, but happily the simple, satisfying fare speaks for itself. The compact menu doesn’t call for extensive decision-making: diners choose between three meats (thinly sliced beef asada, spice-marinated pork adobada, and, for the more adventurous, tender tripa), and their vehicle of choice (corn or flour tortilla, burrito, torta, etc.) and then watch the magic come together before their eyes. Lively, well-balanced salsas and perfectly fresh toppings combine

Fireside

Mexican, Seafood

$$$

Perched high up on the rocky mountainside, this chic restaurant in the MIRA Earth Studios is a total oasis built for bliss. A sleek pool anchors the space, which has cushy banquettes and daybeds positioned to enjoy sweeping views of the valley. More than a place to lounge and swim, the daytime restaurant offers a short but finely prepared menu of small plates that delivers in spades. Pristine seafood handled with care is a highlight. Queen clams with morita chili butter, grilled scallops with ginger and other lovely dips and bites match the leisurely vacation vibes. Another round of cocktails?

Kous Kous

Moroccan

This stunning restaurant with dramatic views may seem like other outdoor spots in the area but keep down the path and a lively space draped with curtains and Moroccan lamps soon appears, revealing the singular experience. Come for an unexpected yet memorable meal spotlighting Moroccan cuisine. There is plenty of heart and loads of flavor in this family-style selection where guests take their pick of protein for the tagine. Kick the meal off with flatbread, made in-house, along with a refreshing cucumber salad. From the chicken with olives to the honey lamb, the tagine offerings are exceptional

Bruma Wine Garden

Contemporary

$$$$

Run by Chef David Castro Hussong, this spot is located on the Bruma winery property. Entirely outside, the lovely tree-covered space welcomes guests to take a seat at the oversized communal table or a few smaller tables flanking the sides. A contemporary menu echoes the casual setting. Starters like ceviche or cauliflower with mole are followed up by hearty main dishes like short rib with shiitake and noodles. The pizzas are a popular choice, and though far from traditional Italian, the Mexican spin (think tender beef birria with chile morita) are very successful. Don't sleep on dessert, espec

Deckman's En El Mogor

Mexican

$$$$

It's a short drive off the main road to the Cavas del Mogor property, home of this flagship restaurant. As is common in this region, the dining space is outdoors, built on a platform with tables shaded by trees and a roof lit with cafe lights. In the middle, a live fire kitchen takes center stage. Drew Deckman's cooking is contemporary Mexican, as in a tempura fried soft shell crab on a bed of dressed arugula and sorrel leaves with avocado purée and a Pilsner foam. Main dishes, like the short rib or smoked chicken with potatoes and sauerkraut, lean hearty. Ingredients are top notch and there i
