- Gasthof AdlerBib Here, the cooking has been taken back to basics, with the focus placed squarely on the first-rate regional produce. The cuisine of Felix Messner – who runs the restaurant together with his brother Florian – is inspired by Austria and Vorarlberg. The simplicity of the fresh, flavourful dishes (eg breaded fried chicken, potato salad, pumpkin seed oil) is in keeping with the decor in this timber building on the village square, which was erected in 1756 and renovated according to historical models. Warm wood panelling from floor to ceiling makes for a cosy interior. There are also smart guest room4.9km
- Guth★ Michelin Thomas Scheucher's restaurant champions a pleasingly pared-back take on classic cuisine that highlights top-quality ingredients and delivers full flavour with charming simplicity. The menu features dishes such as vitello tonnato made from Andelsbuch veal topside and garnished with caper blossoms, and Lake Constance whitefish fillet with aubergine relish, lime and basil broth, and olive gnocchi. The decor is both tasteful and inviting, with modern artwork and designer lamps adding a touch of elegance. Floor-to-ceiling windows look out onto the garden, where a lovely terrace is set up in summer.7.4km
- Hirschen The mindful concept shines through in Jonathan and Raphaela Burger's cuisine. Ingredients are sourced in the region, the fruit and vegetables are predominantly organic or grown by neighbouring farmers, and a nose-to-tail approach is applied to all produce. The latter philosophy is evident, for example, in a dish of grilled chicken hearts, pumpkin and Schupfnudeln (finger-shaped potato dumplings). They also enjoy cooking vegetarian fare, especially in winter when in-house fermentation plays a major role – for example, their "Vetterhof radish³, gochugaru, miso stock". The setting is gorgeous: au4.9km
- Schulhus In a building that once housed the village school, this restaurant has a history that stretches far back. Gabi and Herbert Strahammer never tire of treating their guests to a relaxed yet stylish gourmet experience – their accessible cuisine is always connected to the region. In a friendly, pared-back ambience, they serve pleasantly uncomplicated, fresh and flavourful dishes, such as ravioli with Langenegger Schottenkäse smoked cheese, herbs, spinach, lemon sauce, or pike from Lake Constance, spinach leaves, roast vegetables, ricotta gnocchi. On-point wine recommendations from the owner.6.9km
- Zum Verwalter Its origins dating back to the 17C, this site is steeped in history. Today the building houses pretty hotel rooms and an extremely tasteful restaurant with authentic charm – plenty of wood and low ceilings make for a really cosy atmosphere. In summer, the terrace, too, is very inviting. When it comes to the food, the kitchen draws on what the market has to offer. Top-notch ingredients are used to create classic veal tartare with pan-fried sweetbreads, for example. The marvellous selection of 600 wines, including top wines from Austria, Italy and France, is a must for wine lovers. The service i7.6km
- Rotes Haus - Restaurant am Marktplatz This charming old Rhine Valley building dating back to 1639 is quite something! A Dornbirn landmark right on the Marktplatz (still the market square), it has been sensitively renovated and restored, and now boasts five really beautiful historical rooms. Delicious Austrian cuisine with Mediterranean influences is on the menu – the Wiener schnitzel and fried chicken are as appetising as the pickled char with radish and rhubarb-wild garlic vinaigrette. The spacious terrace, shaded by parasols, is also inviting.7.8km
- Maurachbund This listed building lies in the heart of Bregenz, in a side street not far from the town hall. It has welcomed diners for over 160 years. Historical rustic-style elements such as old floorboards and wood-panelled ceilings and walls have been beautifully combined with modern interior design details. The dedicated pair running operations are Carla Booz and Manuel Willi – she provides cordial and attentive service front of house, while he oversees the kitchen, cooking up delicious food, including "filet 'Stroganoff' with porcini and spaetzli", or sea bass with a bean and tomato salad served luke7.9km
- Petrus Café Brasserie The popularity of this place is down to the pleasant combination of café and brasserie, the great location in the centre of the old town – and the delicious food. In this centuries-old building (in which it started out as an inn in 1911), in a charming, understated decor, guests enjoy dishes such as beef tartare, pasta, risotto or coq au vin, and then of course there is the house speciality: mussels. Sandwiches are also available at lunchtime. In addition to wine, they serve beer from Belgium, where the owner and his wife lived for a time. - Gasthof Adler This pretty inn, established in 1852, embodies the true spirit of hospitality – and has been doing so for seven generations. The old timber chalet has had a lovely contemporary extension added, without any of its historical character being lost along the way. Whether in the cosy parlours or out in the gorgeous Kastaniengarten, diners tuck into flavoursome seasonal cuisine in a regional vein. Fruit, vegetables, salads and herbs come from the own garden, meat from the own farm, game from the nature park... Cordial and professional service. Food items made in-house can also be purchased to enjoy 8.8km
