Located in a small park, the Kieler Kaufmann hotel is accommodated in a building that was originally a banker's mansion, the first iteration of which was built in 1859. This is the hotel's relaxed, laid-back restaurant alternative to Ahlmanns. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer a view out onto the greenery, and the service is friendly and competent. The restaurant run by the partnership of chef-patron Mathias Apelt and Britta Künzl is housed in the canoe club and has a cool, pared-back design with an urban boathouse feel.
