Modern Cuisine, Creative · ★★ Michelin

Thorsten Bender's creative cuisine certainly explains the popularity of this little restaurant nestled on a quiet residential street. The chef's distinctive style shines through in his technically accomplished, clearly structured dishes, into which he judiciously weaves Asian flavours. The power and intensity of the flavours are as impressive as the degree of finesse and refreshing notes. Top-notch ingredients take centre stage – think Icelandic ikejime char confit in ox marrow fat with roasted leek, leek ash, white Alba truffle and verjus sauce. The upscale interior has a chic, modern feel. S

Hotel Erbprinz is definitely something of an institution in the Karlsruhe area – and not only for the many conference participants who stay here. This is a foodie hotspot that prides itself on its stylish interior and excellent cuisine – the domain of Ralph Knebel and team. They cook classic dishes that draw on international influences, with an emphasis on seasonal produce. The quality of the ingredients is outstanding. There is a set menu comprising five to seven courses that can also be ordered à la carte. Incidentally, Ralph Knebel's wife, Jasmina, is also on board, producing fabulous desse

From this impressive location high up on the Turmberg, the view over Karlsruhe and the Rhine Valley to the Vosges mountains is magnificent. Add to that tasty tapas-style cuisine – the smaller portions are perfect for sharing and sampling a selection. The food is cooked with quality ingredients, some regional, others Mediterranean. Dishes such as braised ox ribs on a corn cream with chilli or tuna with buttermilk and lime are fun to eat and showcase the skills of chef-patron Sören Anders, who is no stranger to the dining scene. The pared-back, modern interior with its large windows is attractiv

With this lovely bistro, Thorsten Bender offers an alternative to sein, his restaurant right next door. The place has a stylish and lively feel; the terrace in the courtyard makes for an irresistibly romantic setting in summer. The commitment that the owners bring to their work is palpable – both in the delicious regional cuisine, which includes classic and modern dishes, and the inviting and pleasingly laid-back service under the direction of the lady of the house. Good food is accompanied by wines at prices that won't break the bank. At lunch, the reasonably priced set menu draws a crowd. Ti

Schwitzer's Gourmet-Restaurant

Classic Cuisine, Contemporary · ★ Michelin

€€€€

In the chic little fine dining restaurant of Schwitzer's Hotel am Park, the open kitchen means you can watch chef-patron Cédric Schwitzer and team at work. Using excellent ingredients, they craft a four- or six-course "culinary journey. What makes a meal here special is that the menu and the course of the evening are modeled on a journey from Karlsruhe/Waldbronn to Paris. You are presented with your "tickets" in an envelope, with descriptions of the dishes, which symbolise the journey to Paris. Recipes grounded in the classics are given a successful modern makeover – precisely and elaborately

Restaurant 1463

Classic Cuisine

This building, dating from 1463, exudes rustic charm both inside and out. Dark wood finishings and low ceilings add to the cosy feel of the two small dining spaces on the first floor. The secluded terrace in the quiet courtyard is also delightful. Verena and Henning Weick, your cordial hosts, run the establishment as a team – she handles service, he is in charge of the kitchen. Diners can choose between two set menus (with optional wine pairings), and each course can also be found in the tempting à la carte selection. There are six lovely comfortable apartments for overnight stays.

Founded in 1984, this family-run establishment located close to the Staatstheater (hence the name) is now run by the second generation, with Daniele di Sario taking the helm several years ago. He delivers classic Italian and French-style cuisine that is in keeping with the zeitgeist: The spaghetti carbonara, turbot with Champagne sauce or lemon dessert ("Kreation von der Zitrone") are shining examples. In keeping with the name of the restaurant, the menu is divided into different sections: Act 1, Intermezzo, Act 2 and Epilogue. Veteran chef Giovanni likes to get in on the action front of house
