El Retiro
Modern Cuisine · ★ Michelin
€€€€
In a small village in Llanes, a traditional family business has evolved with the times; the old ‘chigre’ (tavern) that one day was founded by the grandparents of the chef, Ricardo González Sotres, is seen today with two distinct areas: the informal Le Bistró, which maintains the rustic charm and offers a menu of traditional tastes, and El Retiro, a much more gastronomic space for us to discover its tasting menu. What will you find? A modern Asturian cuisine brimming with technique and creativity, respectful with the raw ingredients of the local area and tremendously balanced. Within the tastin

Asturian “fabada” stew, squid cooked in its own ink, tripe, pig’s trotter and snout give a strong indication of the culinary focus here. Le Bistró occupies the porch of a property that also plays host to the El Retiro fine-dining restaurant, but with its own charming rustic ambience and identity. Here, award-winning chef Ricardo González Sotres conjures up traditional Asturian cuisine that is fully respectful of both ingredients and flavours, in so doing offering a sincere insight into this region, accompanied by highly delicate textures and a nod to fusion cooking. A bright restaurant with a maritime atmosphere on the first floor of the fish auction house in Llanes, opposite the fishing port, hence the constant coming and going of boats unloading their catch or heading out to sea. In this relaxed and friendly setting, enjoy simply yet meticulously prepared cuisine created with the freshest fish and seafood of an extraordinarily high quality.

This longstanding family-run restaurant, located just in front of the local market, boasts a striking nautical decor that provides the backdrop for traditional cuisine that, in perfect harmony with the area’s maritime heritage, champions the highest-quality fish and seafood (priced by weight). This includes seafood stews (“mariscadas”) for sharing and excellent rice options. We can also highly recommend the fried squid (“rabas de calamar”), the legendary “arroz con bogavante” (rice with lobster), a dish for which the family were pioneers, and when it comes to dessert, the delicious cream mille

Seafood
€€
This small eatery, run by an attentive couple who delight guests with their friendly service, champions traditional cuisine that celebrates local produce, with excellent starters that reveal the bounty of the sea (scallops, sea urchins, and grilled octopus tentacles), wild fish from the fish market (usually large cuts) and two delicious rice dishes, one with lobster and the other with clams (the latter only available on prior request). Given its success and limited seating, we recommend booking in advance!
