Its namesake is a Caribbean island just off the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, but this beloved counter, located inside the Mercado La Paloma, is a distinctively Angelino phenomenon. Chef Gilbert Cetina, who previously cooked with his father at neighboring stall Chichen Itza, draws from Mexican coastal cuisines in dishes whose simplicity belies remarkable flavor. Spectacular quality seafood of unassailable freshness leaves an impression, whether in electrifyingly vibrant aguachiles and ceviches, excellent tacos served on house-made heirloom corn tortillas or skillfully grilled lobster — a pan

In the bustling Mercado Del Paloma, Chef Fátima Juárez runs this little stall specializing in corn. Heirloom varieties sourced from Mexico and nixtamalized in-house form the heart of the menu. A quesadilla lined with squash blossoms and sweet corn bound with melty quesillo earns top marks. Golden-fried plantain balls set in a smoky black mole is another accomplished winner. From tlacoyas topped with cactus to tacos lined with short rib, be liberal with the salsa for extra punch and power.

Tucked into a back corner of Pacific Square Shopping Center, this exciting haven specializes in authentic Thai breakfasts and desserts. The playful menu also proffers hearty soups and noodle dishes, so it's hard to go wrong, but first-timers might want to start with jok—congee bubbling with tender pork meatballs, loads of fresh ginger and an egg that cooks gently n the molten rice. Desserts—even post-breakfast—are an absolute delight; and if the mango sticky rice is available, jump on it.The space is casual, with counter service, a welcoming vibe, and friendly servers. This local treasure has been earning accolades since it first opened in 1987. It continues to flourish as a family affair, as the founder’s daughter now runs the show. The front dining room is welcoming, but the enclosed back patio is really the place to be. It's the perfect setting for relishing the kitchen’s Nayarit-style cooking that showcases shrimp and fish imported from Sinaloa. Shrimp appear again and again, perhaps breaded and fried in tacos, or sautéed head-on in a bright red sauce of roasted chilies and beer. Enjoy their fish fried, cooked whole or even inside heaping bowls of cevich

Sushi Sonagi

$$$$
Don't expect to drop by Sushi Sonagi when the mood strikes, as this eight-seat sushi counter is only open on the weekends and hosts just two seatings nightly. Those who have planned ahead will be rewarded with an enticing multicourse omakase prepared by Chef Daniel Son, a second-generation sushi chef. Chawanmushi, an ankimo tart and minimally dressed nigiri are all part of the experience, though it's the dolsot sekogani, or female snow crab stone pot rice, that makes a big impression. Presented to guests in the pot, then heated to produce a crispy crust, it's then portioned to eager diners who
