Maison Colette
French, Modern Cuisine · ★★ Michelin
€€€€
A wind of enthusiasm heralds Thijs Vervloet’s return to Tongerlo. This former doctor’s home has been entirely refurbished with alfresco dining in the garden and five deluxe guestrooms. Luxury is the bedrock of the high-end establishment from its Gallic poise and floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the interior in light to the cosily intimate drapes and made-to-measure porcelain tableware by Pieter Stockmans! A champion of the ingredient, Vervloet’s culinary signature seeks to place his classical background and training at the service of a demanding score underpinned by sensitivity and know-how

Hof Ter Hulst
French, Classic French · ★ Michelin
€€€
Some establishments just know how to warm the cockles of one’s heart and Hof Ter Hulst is one such. The delightful Campine farmhouse has morphed into a characterful venue and as soon as you set foot inside the door, you understand that Johan Schroven doesn’t mess around with tradition, as his rich score demonstrates. The first bite of the langoustine, which is crafted with textbook precision, bears witness to the outstanding quality of the ingredients, further enhanced by a refreshing zest of lemon, without forgetting a creamy oxtail stew, truffles and a rich gravy that complete this exquisite

L'oh
Seasonal Cuisine, Creative French
€€€
L’oh has pulled off the feat of combining a classy stylish interior with a feel-good, homely vibe. One glance at the kitchen, behind a glazed partition, reveals the enthusiasm, spot-on precision and dedication of the kitchen brigade. Chef Simon’s hallmark revolves around outstanding produce and local delicacies, including from his own garden, together with a passion for spices. An example of his consummate craftsmanship are the scallops from Dieppe, which are glazed and served with various textures of pumpkin and a creamy Vadouvan sauce. This talented chef is confident enough to simply allow t

Jerome
French, Belgian
€€
With its black and white chequered floor tiles and bench seats lining the walls, Jerome is reminiscent of a snug Parisian bistro. Alexe, your hostess, supervises the front of house with seamless, classy elegance. Meticulous attention to detail prevails throughout the establishment, including in chef Van der Stappen’s authentic yet subtle Franco-Belgian repertory. The chef is particularly attentive to the plating. A standout: veal blanquette simmered in a creamy succulent sauce with meatballs, slightly tangy button mushrooms, flat-leaf parsley and house-made potato fritters. Gutsy, wholesome fl

Melchior
Modern French, Fusion · ★ Michelin
€€€€
Melchior would be just the ticket for a fashion shoot. Old brick walls and high ceilings bear witness to the edifice’s historic legacy, while huge lamps and a Scandinavian interior design edge impart a trendy vibe, as does the graffiti on the terrace. It is here that Gilles Melchior showcases his high-flying skill and ability to fusion knife-edge Japanese techniques with classical finesse. The chef’s sauces, dressings and gravies are out of this world. A past master of traditional techniques, he knows just how to balance his creativity and is constantly broadening his culinary scope to incorpo

De Lindehoeve
Modern French
€€€
Pallieter Vaes has breathed a new lease of life into this country hostelry, whose classical period details and fixtures have been retained, adding to the cachet and character of this airy establishment. The chef, who boasts an enviable CV, is manifestly a fan of top-notch produce. When he works with scallops, he may give them a crispy crust, which is then offset by side dishes like squash, ginger, a sea vegetable and a lovage-perfumed beurre blanc. You can expect a culinary lineup packed in gutsy flavours and delicacy. The à la carte is more traditional than the set menu, but both hit the spot

De Gouden Muts
French Contemporary
€€€€
This elegant villa is so cosy and inviting, and with the warm welcome extended by Evi, your charming maître d', you are sure to feel right at home. In the open kitchen, chef Rudy puts his own spin on French and Belgian recipes, adding in the requisite zing and occasional Japanese nuances. For instance, he uses miso to enhance flavours, but he also stays true to tradition with dishes such as pigeon cooked on the bone and served with beetroot and foie gras. He takes a detailed approach to his cooking, and his rich sauces are a key part of his dishes.

Zappaz
Modern Cuisine
€€€
From the artwork by Peter Wellens and Charlotte De Baere that adorns the bar area to the spacious Scandinavian inspired dining room, Zappaz is a treat for the eye. In the kitchen, chef Seppe demonstrates that contemporary fine dining can be both polished and playful. Creative touches and international flavours like dashi and ponzu are perfectly at home in his inventive score. The menu of three to five courses shines the spotlight on creative recipes, like venison, served medium rare, with prunes and red beetroot, an emulsion of curly kale, churros and a punchy gravy.
