There’s been a recent change in management at this informal, friendly restaurant which serves generously portioned, carefully prepared dishes from the region and elsewhere in Italy, all at highly competitive prices. Although the cuisine might not be particularly modern, this is good solid cuisine served in a welcoming atmosphere.

A young couple (she was born in China; he’s half-French, half-Italian) have settled in this quiet residential district where they now run a tiny yet successful restaurant with around 20 seats in the dining room and a few small tables outdoors in summer – booking is essential! The menu includes various types of Chinese ravioli as well as dishes described by the couple as “migrant”, in other words “which draw inspiration from different cuisines from around the world, not only Asia but also the Mediterranean, France and Italy, with Emilia Romagna at its heart”. It was friendship and passion for Japanese cuisine that prompted two young business partners to open this quiet, welcoming restaurant in the heart of Bologna. The produce of the hills come down into the city: this, in essence, is the restaurant. Within the mediaeval Torre Alberici, in the heart of the historic centre, the simple dining room furnished in a contemporary style showcases the produce that the Zivieri farm itself rears and cultivates in the Apennines. Regional cookery, therefore, of an excellent standard, with charcuterie and meats as the jewel in the crown, which moreover can also be purchased, along with cheeses and other foods, from their adjacent butcher’s shop.

Although it calls itself a trattoria, this restaurant situated in a narrow street in the city centre has an elegant ambience, welcoming guests with friendly service and serving an equal balance of meat and fish dishes. Our inspector particularly enjoyed the foie gras sautéed with Lambrusco blueberries and pan brioche, and the “finché c’è bottarga c’è speranza” (“while there’s bottarga, there’s hope”) spaghetti served with tuna tartare, mullet roe, lime and pistachios.

This restaurant describes its cuisine as Mediterranean and it’s true that fish and seafood dominate the menu. However, other dishes also feature and during our visit we particularly enjoyed the carefully prepared fried artichoke heart accompanied by a fresh white Tuscan Montecarlo wine. Friendly, informal service in a simple dining room with a distinctive bistro feel.
