Shingo

Japanese, Sushi · ★ Michelin

$$$$

Chef Shingo Akikuni, ever gracious and welcoming, has returned, now back in action behind a spacious, 14-seat counter in Coral Gables. Most premium sushi omakases work with half as many seats, but there’s no cause for concern here: Chef Akikuni and his second-in-command handle the crowd without breaking a sweat and even switch sides midway through the meal. Once the room fills with the sharp smell of vinegar to mix into the sushi rice, it’s off to the races. Fish is sourced almost entirely from Japan, sliced in uniform fashion, and, dressed with little more than a swipe of nikiri. They keep a

Tinta y Cafe

Cuban, Regional Cuisine · 必比登

Coral Gables is home to this original operation, happily christened with a name that translates to ink and coffee. Unsurprisingly, there are artfully arranged bookshelves that line its glass façade, while the interior design most certainly resembles that of a coffee shop. Grab a table either inside or out under a cluster of palm trees and settle in for a litany of Cuban delicacies, including pastelito de carne, pastelito de guava, and of course, cafe con leche. The furniture is mid-century modern, but the sandwich-focused menu is as classic and comforting as ever. Deep-fried croquetas are not t

Bachour

Contemporary, Bakery · 必比登

Welcome to the workshop of Chef Antonio Bachour, a talented baker whose brightly colored tarts and elaborate pastries take center stage in this industrial setting. Open since 2019, an arch of roses marks the entrance to this busy daytime spot. Once inside, a perch at the counter in the back offers diners a front-row view of the glass-enclosed bakery. Seating aside, a simple lunch of ham croquettes, crab tostones, or a salad is the best way to start before going all-in on a dazzling array of sweets. Think mango-passion fruit macarons, flaky croissants striped with vibrant green bands of pistach

Zitz Sum

There are countless rules and traditions when it comes to cooking, but don’t tell Pablo Zitzmann, whose inspiration stretches from China to Japan to Italy. Following the wild success of his dumpling pop-up, the Colombian chef found a home on the ground floor of an admittedly stoic office building in Coral Gables. It is the last place you would expect to find ba filled with Niman ranch short rib topped with habanada sofrito and chili crunch, or a thick wedge of charred cabbage capped with melted parmesan cheese and set in a pool of Fresno chili butter. The cooking is original and gutsy; and plat

To Be Determined

Seasonal Cuisine · 必比登

Friends Robert Ortega and Jhonny Delgado are creating something special in this neighborhood eatery, offering a casual yet elevated dining experience. The ever-evolving, seasonal menu consists of eight or so dishes, with everything made in house. The crab arepa, a classical Venezuelan cornmeal patty, filled with lovely deep-fried soft-shell crab and finished with a nice tangy chimichurri salsa, is delicious. Cheese Benedict with cured ham, fried mushrooms, rich Parmesan cream and topped with poached eggs, is served with lightly toasted shokupan (Japanese milk bread) which is perfect for moppin

Kojin 2.0

Chefs Pedro and Katherine Mederos are back with Kojin 2.0 and it's not just the Coral Gables location that's new. This iteration's contemporary menu has clear Japanese influences and whether you swing for the tasting menus or order a la carte, expect bold cooking that takes risks while delivering approachable dishes. Foie toast—rye bread topped with a round of goose liver ganache and a dot of strawberry preserves—captures the culinary spirit of this place, where you may encounter equally creative dishes like bone marrow panna cotta finished with a stunning house-made coffee shoyu; a savory-swe

Los Félix

Mexican, Regional Cuisine · ★ Michelin

Heritage corn sourced from across the Americas and seafood fetched from nearby waters are foundational pillars for this youthful restaurant in Coconut Grove. Such sustainability is a point of pride for Chef Sebastian Vargas, who offers a finely poised expression of Mexican cuisine that leans on subtle flavors and top-notch ingredients. Anyone can throw together a fish taco, but few are willing to source grouper from Key West, grill it in a banana leaf, and pair it with a deceptively addicting hazelnut emulsion. Another recent highlight featured a superb griddled corn cake paired with crab, smo

Sanguich De Miami

Cuban · 必比登

What started out as a little shipping container in 2017 has morphed into this brick-and-mortar hot spot in Little Havana. There is almost always a line of diners vying to squeeze into the narrow space, designed with emerald-green walls, vibrant tile and sleek brass trimmings.Everyone comes for the same thing: a superb Cuban sandwich featuring pork butt that's been marinated for a week in garlic and spices, then pressed between expertly grilled slices of house-made bread. A heavier but equally flavorful alternative is the lechon, starring tender shredded pork slathered in garlic-cilantro aïoli.
