This custom-designed domain of Chef Brian Limoge exudes cozy sophistication and is a respectful retooling of a late 1800s Victorian structure in downtown Sonoma. This tasting menu marries global flavors, refined technique and exceptional ingredients, including produce sourced from affiliated Stone Edge Farm, all shot through with subtle nods to the chef’s New England roots. Take, for example, the signature clam chawanmushi which evokes the spirit of chowder. The team shows a masterful hand with grilling, and the complementing sauces surprise and delight, as in luscious hearth-roasted quail ado

Lovers of regional Mexican food will swoon for this laid-back charmer, which offers full-throttle fare made with quality ingredients. The colorful little building has a strange layout (order at the counter, then pass through the kitchen to dine on the patio), but it still draws a large following — expect to chat with fellow diners hungry for intel on the day’s best dishes. Entrées shift with the seasons, but the preparations are always expert. Past highlights include red mole chicken tamale, pozole verde, beer-battered fish tacos and chicken enchiladas. Bring friends — you'll need them if you

The Sonoma Plaza lucked out with this little wine bar, with its welcoming neighborhood feel. Its vibe is come-as-you-are, while the affordable wine list is a veritable call to adventure, highlighting organic and biodynamic favorites from the nooks and crannies of California and beyond. It wouldn’t be so unreasonable to eat here either; the tiny menu is a revolving door of fresh ingredients prepared with little fuss, but plenty of flavor. From albacore tuna crudo with celtuce and blood orange, to cauliflower with savory black bean sauce, everything is better shared . For dessert, olive oil cake

The setting is charmingly quaint, but don’t be fooled—this humble cottage boasts a serious culinary operation that draws in crowds rain or shine. The cozy space hinges around a wood-burning oven, which in turn serves as the springboard for a compact menu of compelling, inventive Californian cuisine overseen by Chef Ari Weiswasser. Biodynamic produce sourced from nearby Glentucky Family Farm is a mainstay, from wholesome, vibrantly fresh salads, to lightly charred, smoke-kissed roasted vegetables like sugar snap peas with truffle-chili cashew crunch. Thomas Keller’s legendary destination still doesn’t miss a beat. In fact this may be known as the greatest cooking space in America, as every aspect is carefully determined—from the counter height to the flowing lines of the ceiling. Chef Keller continues to pair classic French techniques with wildly fresh ingredients in a setting that is a perfect storm of restaurant greatness—we should all be so lucky to score a reservation here. The cornet filled with crème fraîche and topped with Atlantic salmon tartare is an impressive start before moving on to dishes like Atlantic pompano amandine, sweet

Focused on an offering of enticing seasonal Japanese cuisine, Kenzo Tsujimoto's downtown Napa dining room is a place to wash away worldly cares. Designed by his wife Natsuko, this space is serene and minimal. The best seats are at the long counter, where diners can chat with the chefs and watch their meal being prepared. The kaiseki experience is composed, elegantly paced and may feature dishes such as steamed scallop dumpling in a fragrant dashi made with three-year-aged katsuobushi, or seared A5 Wagyu tenderloin with burdock root miso. Desserts, like their honey ice cream topped with candied

A pleasant contrast to the sleek new spots around town, this dining room's country-style curtains and front porch are a ticket to another era—and a hot ticket at that, since tables are hard to come by. Indeed, this Yountville gem could pass off as a John Wayne film set, with its wood-framed, 1916-era grocery look. Blistered, puffy crusts boast a tangy flavor of fermentation and a hint of smoke from the fire, an excellent vehicle for hearty toppings like crispy cabbage leaves paired with thinly sliced pancetta and melty gouda. Set just off Highway 29, Press offers a composed expression of contemporary Californian dining in a grand Wine Country setting. The soaring dining room, anchored by a fireplace and warm wood tones, feels elegant without any stiffness, making it well suited to long, unhurried meals. The cooking favors clarity and precision, allowing pristine ingredients to lead. Dishes like charcoal-grilled lobster, ricotta gnudi finished with a tableside pour of consommé and American wagyu rib cap show a kitchen confident in balance and restraint, not excess.
