Set in a converted Craftsman in the historic Rose Park neighborhood, this inviting locale is removed from the hustle and bustle of Long Beach. Brother-and-sister duo Philip and Lauren Pretty run the kitchen and front of house, respectively, curating an experience that’s relaxed, but gets the details just right. On offer is a single multicourse tasting (priced quite reasonably) that highlights top-notch ingredients, including produce sourced from their nearby farm. The cooking has a California accent, and seasonal fruit may form a common thread, as in preserved kumquats paired with roasted beet

Chef Yasuhiro Hirano turns out some of the most exciting sushi in town at a counter in a private room tucked within sister restaurant, I-naba. His particular magic lies in weaving together a few key components, including exotic fish that he ages before blending with a host of ingredients. He’s mastered dishes that more established pros haven't—and to such precise and polished effect. With just a handful of seats at the counter and one seating nightly, reservations are a must (and go quickly). Chef Hirano enjoys sharing his craft, but you may opt for silence to savor such delicacies as soba with

At the end of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, find a windy road that meanders through the plush grounds of the Terranea Resort. Beautiful herb gardens are planted along the sidewalk leading you to Mar’sel, a blend of the Spanish and French words for sea and salt. Inside, breathtaking ocean views and a roaring fireplace take the chill off the evening breeze. A sense of opulence pervades everything here, including the superb service. Meals commence with a warm homemade English muffin that may have its own cult following. Every dish looks beautiful and well made, especially those cubes of supremely t

The Attic

Southern

Owner Steve Massis and Chef Cameron Slaugh are responsible for this Craftsman-style "house" in bustling Long Beach. The bungalow façade gives way to a front porch and fittingly homey interior, featuring a collection of rooms. In the first, there's a brick fireplace and herringbone-style floors; another, set to the left, highlights floral wallpaper and black-and-white tiles. These plates are gorgeous and decidedly Southern, but not without a twist or two, as in bubble and squeak or roasted cauliflower with cracked oats. Fried chicken and biscuits are at the heart of the carte, along with gumbo a

Chiang Rai is exactly why you don’t judge a book by its cover. It would be easy to walk past the modest exterior, but inside is a colorful, quirky dining room serving one of the more expansive Northern Thai menus in town. While the offerings range from familiar curries and noodle dishes to street-food staples, the Chiang Rai Local Food section remains the place to focus. The kitchen is happy to adjust spice levels for those seeking more heat, while dishes like sai uao, a fragrant Northern Thai pork sausage, or khao soi with thin slices of raw ribeye gently cooked tableside in curry broth showc

Helmed by chefs have a century of experience under their collective belts, Koi Japanese Cuisine may have a familiar name, but this spot stands firmly on its own. It's not hip or trendy, but it is beloved by regulars who are known by their first names and have a clear rapport with the chefs. Though it has history and heart, these regulars are here for more than just a warm welcome. From orange clam and kampachi to Kumamoto and Kusshi oysters, the sashimi lineup is impressive. A tempura of zucchini flowers stuffed with scallops serves as a culinary intermission between the sashimi and nigiri, wh

$$$$

Don't expect to drop by Sushi Sonagi when the mood strikes, as this eight-seat sushi counter is only open on the weekends and hosts just two seatings nightly. Those who have planned ahead will be rewarded with an enticing multicourse omakase prepared by Chef Daniel Son, a second-generation sushi chef. Chawanmushi, an ankimo tart and minimally dressed nigiri are all part of the experience, though it's the dolsot sekogani, or female snow crab stone pot rice, that makes a big impression. Presented to guests in the pot, then heated to produce a crispy crust, it's then portioned to eager diners who

Ryla, from husband-and-wife chefs Ray Hayashi and Cynthia Hetlinger, remains one of Hermosa Beach’s splashier dining destinations, pairing a lively coastal atmosphere with contemporary cooking rooted in Japanese technique and broader Asian influences. The menu encourages sharing across a wide range of small plates, sushi, noodles and larger mains. Dishes like Japanese yellowtail hiramasa sashimi with mizuna, nori crema and ponzu, or blistered green beans with crispy tofu and black bean sauce showcase the kitchen’s bold flavors and layered textures.
