Run by the Hupfer family, this establishment enjoys a tranquil location on the Herrenschwand high plateau, 1 020m above sea level. This stunning setting is surrounded by an abundance of greenery – unsurprisingly, tables on the garden terrace are coveted. Son Volker delivers exceptional cuisine that is entirely centered on the region and the season. In addition to set menus (regular or vegan) and à la carte dishes, there is a selection of traditional Black Forest snacks. Overnight accommodation in this picturesque corner of Todtnau can easily be arranged – guestrooms are available in stammHaus

Kamino
Mediterranean Cuisine, Country cooking
€€€
The Zumkeller family have transformed what was once Chämi-Hüsli into this cosy restaurant and tapas bar – the striking fireplace with extended flue after which Kamino is named presides in the middle of the dining area, which has a high ceiling and a round floor plan. The classic and Mediterranean cuisine always has a modern touch and a certain pizazz. Dishes such as roasted sea bass fillet with home-made tagliarini and lobster cream give the tasty tapas a run for their money. The icing on the cake is the charming service provided by owner Stefanie Zumkeller and her team. For an overnight stay,

Following the reopening of Hotel Auerhahn, owner Marius Tröndle (who also runs Mühle in Schluchsee) has appointed an ambitious new head chef to lead his fine dining restaurant. After stints at various MICHELIN-starred establishments, Yann Bosshammer now oversees a kitchen dedicated to modern, seasonally inspired dishes crafted from premium regional produce, such as "grilled salsify, quince, black garlic" or "Albbruck brook trout, tonka bean, pear". If you are not staying at the hotel, book your table for the "Fine Dining Menu" in advance. The setting is lovely; the beautifully modernised space

Brasserie Barbara
Farm to table, German
€€
Open from noon to 8.30pm, Brasserie Barbara is an appealing daytime alternative to the fine dining restaurant here at the Auerhahn "wellness hotel", which is just across the road from the lake, Schluchsee. The bright, friendly atmosphere is inviting. The completely open kitchen produces cleverly devised dishes that are both bold and pleasingly uncomplicated. Based on top-notch ingredients, they are deeply rooted in regional culinary tradition. Options on the appealing à la carte menu include starters such as "Black Forest croquetas" or beef tartare with french fries, followed by a main course
