The famous idiom about not judging a book by its cover couldn’t be more applicable than to this tortilleria-turned-tasting menu. In an empty strip mall with little around except for a brewery and a doughnut shop, Chef Emmanuel Chavez delivers a beautifully pitched and portioned experience that celebrates heirloom corn from across Mexico. Start with a crisp tostada topped with tuna and a luxurious scoop of caviar, then a fine Tlacoyo de suadero comes with a multi-layered and tasty Mexican XO sauce. The most original and striking effort might be the black-as-night mole negro, which comes blanket

da Gama Canteen

Indian, Portuguese · 必比登

Portuguese and Indian flavors live in harmony at da Gama Canteen, located in Houston Heights. Named after the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, this restaurant from Chefs Shiva and Rick Di Virgilio draws inspiration from the Portuguese Indian territories of Goa, East Africa and Portugal. Expect a tapas-style menu displaying a fascinating fusion of the two cultures with bold and vibrant flavors. Must-orders include chana masala, or braised chickpeas and potatoes served with basmati rice, and beef mishkaki, an East African-style marinated beef tenderloin with fried yuca, kachumber and raita. How many beignets is too many? In what feels like an easygoing tavern, these light pillows land on the table warm, filled with ricotta cheese, and topped with thin slivers of Benton’s ham. One could nearly make a meal out of them. Such is the appeal of this confident neighborhood spot from the ever-busy Chef Aaron Bludorn. Wrapped in dark wood lit under keen spotlights, the dining room has clear views of a gleaming open kitchen. Just as service is both approachable and attentive, the menu too deals in hearty, comfort fare that’s short on fuss and long on flavor. From pasta to steaks, everythin

Credence

It may be ranch-inspired but Credence is firmly planted in Houston. Large and airy, the dining room is anchored by an open kitchen with a live fire.Credence is Chef/owner Levi Goode’s first brick-and-mortar, and it perfectly showcases his background as a fifth-generation Texan and classically trained chef. From fresh seafood towers and smoked tuna dip to hearty, live-fire options like whole duck and ribeye, there is plenty to like on this menu. Deviled crab meat tossed in a smoky tomato butter is even better when accompanied by monkey bread to soak up every last trace. Look to the flame to gui

Bring friends to this underground party of a restaurant in the Heights. Heavy beats boom through the austere, concrete dining room fit with moody lighting and a long open kitchen armed with a glowing hearth. Yes, this is where the cool people eat. The tight menu leans into live-fire cooking and pulls ideas from all over: grilled oysters with 'nduja; maitake with smoked butter, tamari and carajillo. Sharing really is the best way forward here, so order the pork chop or striped bass. The crunchy endive 4.0 salad is so good you may not want to share, however. The signature Basque cheesecake, topp

Agnes and Sherman

Asian Contemporary, Creative

Agnes and Sherman is a fun spot in the Houston Heights neighborhood from Chef Nick Wong and Lisa Lee. Rooted in their third-culture upbringing and love for nostalgic flavors, it's an Asian American-inspired diner with a casual and cool vibe. It's just right for meeting a friend, dining solo or taking a date. As for the dishes, think comfort food meets playful takes. Favorites like shrimp toast and savory scallion waffle with sambal honey butter kick things off. Then, chilled noodles tossed with vegetables and yuba are a tempting selection, as is their take on egg foo young, with a crawfish-stu
