Situated within the splendid Great Fosters hotel – itself surrounded by beautiful formal gardens which you'd be wise to walk around – The Tudor Pass is an impressive, intimate restaurant that's right at home in such a charming and characterful setting. The surprise tasting menu comes in two lengths and you'll be glad you went for the longer one once you try the wonderful seasonal cooking. Excellent ingredients are elevated by their well-crafted accompaniments, such as fallow deer with an intense red wine sauce, fried girolles and a sharp blackberry purée that cuts through the richness.

This red-brick, 19th-century former beer house packs in bags of charm thanks to its original features like exposed brickwork and fireplaces, combined with tan banquettes, wood panelling and vintage photos – while a lovely garden and semi-covered terrace are the icing on the cake. The cooking delivers bold flavours in modern dishes with a classical base: think crispy pig's head followed by chicken Kiev or a char-grilled steak to share between two. The wine list offers plenty of choice, as does the wide range of beers.

Taller diners may wish to duck their head as they enter this 400-year-old pub, with its low beams being a sign of the building’s characterful touches. Wood and stone floors add to the appeal, while modern furnishings blend in with the historic roots. The choice of menus offers something for everyone, from a tasting option to a good value lunch and an à la carte.
