Chef Nicholas Bazik and his team know exactly what they’re doing in this historic row house. In full view of the counter, they deliver a high-wire, high-stakes performance defined by precision, harmony and, of course, taste. Korean and French influences come and go with this elaborate tasting menu where special soys, vibrant oils and glossy sauces give wonderful dimension to pristine seafood and dry-aged proteins. Think marinated vegetables with a celery vinegar and anchoïade or noodles with chili crunch, caviar and uni. The ideas are original, the flavors bold. Such creativity hews closely to

Royal Sushi & Izakaya

Japanese, Izakaya · 必比登

Many izakayas buckle under the weight and scale of their own menus, struggling to balance variety with quality. This isn’t one of those places. People dash to the door of this windowless, walk-in only hangout hoping to find an empty booth or a spare seat at the bar. Find a range of fried, steamed, seared and raw dishes. Think hamachi turbocharged with ponzu, cucumbers fortified with miso and buckwheat, and cod grilled until the skin is crisp as a chip. There’s more, like fried chicken thigh sandos or grand chirashi bowls festooned with Japanese fish, caviar and Ikura. All of it is carefully so

When dining at Chef Carlos Aparicio’s colorful little spot in South Philly, you need a strategy, and you need friends. Adobo-seared tuna with salsa macha verde and hibiscus-habanero aguachile is as refreshing as it looks. Rabbit tinga tostadas make for a good first impression as well. These two dishes alone could pass for a full meal, but then you’d miss the main event. The heart of this menu revolves around hearty cemitas, Puebla-style sandwiches stacked high and built on sesame-seeded buns made in-house. Share these serious sandwiches and leave room for an order of flour tortillas, which arr

Famous 4th Street Delicatessen

Deli · 必比登

The Famous 4th Street Delicatessen, a Philly institution since 1923, sits on the corner of 4th and Bainbridge Streets in Queen Village. Long known for its towering corned beef and pastrami sandwiches, the menu is a treasure trove of beloved Jewish deli classics, starting with a lineup of hefty sandwiches like Reubens, roast beef and pastrami, each served with a choice of sides like potato salad, chips or a potato pancake. It also stretches into appetizers, salads, soups, cheesesteaks, traditional dinners, smoked fish and a full breakfast spread. Everything is made with a sense of pride; the me

If you’re staying away from carbs, then you best steer clear of this restaurant too. But for everyone else, this tiny but mighty kitchen in South Philly is impossible to resist. Once a butcher shop that spanned three generations, the restaurant under Marc Vetri delivers a tight menu of handmade pastas. Think pitch-perfect cacio e pepe with tonnarelli or cloud-like orbs of ricotta gnocchi bathed in brown butter. Do you have room for mezzelune stuffed with sweetbreads and veal? Of course you do. End with a simple and satisfying scoop of ice cream.

Angelo's

American, Pizza · 必比登

No matter the time of day, there’s always a line stretched around this corner off Palumbo Park. This cash-only hotspot has no seating anywhere, forcing diners to scatter about the neighborhood to eat on benches and sidewalks. The trouble is well worth it. Serious, hefty cheesesteaks bound with Cooper Sharp cheese or “long hot whiz” are built on long, warm, sesame-seed hoagies. Hot cherry peppers are a necessary topping. A single sandwich could feed two with ease. Those who also want pizza will need friends to take on this imposing feast.

Del Rossi's

American, Pizza · 必比登

In a city where cheesesteak traditions are everything, this restaurant in Northern Liberties goes above and beyond the norm by baking their own bread. Sporting a crackly crust, sesame-seeded sourdough arrives with finely seared and salted chopped steak tossed with fried onions, bound with creamy Cooper Sharp American cheese, and, ideally, topped with a long hot pepper for requisite heat. The kitchen also stretches dough into thin pizzas. Consider the Brooklyn-style grandma pie with its buttery, crisp crust, bright tomato sauce and fresh basil. Simple tables in the back provide a fair amount of

Note: Temporarily closedRestaurants could learn a thing or two from this eccentric spot. There are no long narratives or spiels once you’re seated, and the menu shows no interest in trends. The sparse room is painted in a quirky purple with Japanese tatami tables on one side. Named after her mother, Chef Alexandra Holt just wants to cook — and cook she can. Not one to shy away from seasoning, she offers a small selection of dishes that prioritize flavor over fuss. Garlic scapes arrive buried under a mountain of ripe melon with sheep’s milk cheese running down one side. Delicate ricotta gnudi a
