In the 19C this was home to a wheelwright; then it was a stop for drovers and waggoners to enjoy a quick snack or ‘bait’; now it’s a friendly country pub welcoming allcomers with its rustic look and friendly atmosphere. Multiple terraces ensure this substantial-looking pub makes the most of its waterside location on the banks of the River Teme. Sit back and admire the view while you choose from a mightily appealing menu that mixes classic crowd-pleasers from both French and British cuisine; perhaps begin with fish soup, rouille and gruyère, followed by battered haddock and chips. These well-priced dishes are low on fuss and high on flavour, so be sure to hang around for the sticky toffee pudding too. A local forest gives this 16C townhouse restaurant its name. It has plenty of character, courtesy of exposed stone, sloping floors and lovely wood panelling. Concise set menus offer classically rooted dishes with a personal touch. Make sure you have a dessert – the cherry Bakewell tart is delicious!
