Foliage hangs from the ceiling, while a drawing of a favela pays homage to where Chef Viktor Silva grew up; the restaurant’s name, Amai, is a tribute to the women who raised him. The tasting menu fuses Irish produce with South American flavours in dishes that are packed with interesting flavours and textures.

For one, its immense popularity means there’s a brilliant buzz to the place; add to that its canalside setting and appealingly simple interior, and the stage is set for a terrific night out. Start with a glass from their well-chosen list of fine Italian wines, before diving into the roll-call of classic dishes. The ossobuco with risotto Milanese is a good choice, as is the light and well-balanced tiramisu. The friendly team manage the busy room with aplomb.

Exuding a sense of history throughout its quirky interiors, this old Victorian grocer's shop is mentioned in James Joyce’s ‘Ulysses’, and what was once the clerk’s snug is now a glass-enclosed private dining room. The cooking itself is a showcase for Irish produce, such as fine lamb from The Comeragh Mountains served with a punchy black olive ketchup. Either before or after dinner, 'The Sitting Room' makes a great place for a drink.

A welcome addition to this residential seaside town just south of Dublin, Caladh sits inside a double-fronted Georgian property painted in a fresh light green colour that permeates inside, giving a cool, calming vibe to the brasserie-style dining room. The chefs aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel here, and therein lies the appeal. Classic dishes like confit duck leg and grilled pork chop are ingredient-led and lean on the abundant natural flavours of the produce. A sensibly priced wine list adds to the already considerable attraction.

An elegant, intimate establishment with bold décor and an unusual shopping centre location, this long-standing Indian restaurant continues to deliver eminently satisfying dishes to the residents of its lovely seaside town. There are clearly skill and experience aplenty in the kitchen, evident everywhere from the plump tandoori prawns to the superior naan from a proper tandoor oven. The kulfis for dessert are not to be missed either, with a terrific creamy texture and well-balanced flavours. Chatty, engaging service enhances the appeal.

The Coach House

A complete top-to-toe refurbishment has left this former Victorian coaching inn looking fabulous, with an aesthetic that could be best described as shabby-chic meets Irish country house. The front bar has been retained, making this still feel very much like a pub, while the large, airy dining room provides a great setting for dishes that come free of gimmicks or over-elaboration, instead showing off the natural flavours of the produce, such as quality cod from the Irish Sea. There is a welcome originality too, as when offering beef cheeks in a bun instead of the classic pub burger.
