He champions a responsible approach, as is apparent in his classic cuisine, which features seasonal and regional ingredients. In this centuries-old inn in the beautiful old town, this is a truly charming alternative to the fine dining restaurant. Both the inviting, rustic-style restaurant room and fantastic inner courtyard are appealing places to eat. In the evening, you can order modern-inspired classic dishes à la carte or opt for the "Romantik" set menu. Many of the ingredients are locally sourced; some of the vegetables are from their own garden, and they have their own wines. Hearty meals (‘Brotzeit’) are served at lunchtime.

This picture-perfect Gasthaus is located on Marktplatz, in the centre of this quaint wine-growing town. The lovely little terrace is as inviting as the elegantly charming interior. Your dedicated hosts, Heidrun Kaufmann and Markus Lösch, really know how to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere: she provides cordial service with a personal touch; he cooks up ambitious dishes brimming with bold flavours – venison ragout fin with rye bread gnocchi, or sea bass with artichokes and lemon polenta. Excellent wines from Wirsing wine estate.

On the site of the city's erstwhile covered market, Bernhard Reiser – inspired by that previous vocation – has brought to life a friendly, casual, seasonal restaurant concept. At lunchtime, a concise, reasonably priced menu including an enticing three-course set menu is served; in the evening, the cuisine is more ambitious and comes in à la carte or surprise menu form. Tables are laid out on the ground floor and in the gallery. From some seats you have a direct view of the action in the open kitchen on the lower level. In summer, head for the terrace overlooking the market square.

A delightfully unpretentious restaurant run by a pleasant team in Coburg's old town. The modern interior is lovely, and the service is friendly, attentive and professional. Seasonal dishes with international influences are rustled up in the partially visible kitchen. The lunch menu is somewhat more limited. Tip: Visit the palace, Schloss Ehrenburg, opposite. For motorists: There are two underground car parks (Albertplatz and Mauer) underground car park just a four-minute walk from the restaurant.

The journey out here to the countryside is well worth it, because Detlef Gerner and his wife Tanja live and breathe hospitality par excellence in their cosy restaurant. The hand-written menu features flavoursome dishes based on seasonal and predominantly regional produce – incidentally, they bake their own bread. In summer, you can sit on the terrace out front. Overnight accommodation in the pretty "Häusla" (for two to seven people).
