In an idyllic location overlooking Midsummer Common, inside an equally beautiful Victorian house, you'll find this stylish, long-standing restaurant. Over 20 years into its lifetime, the dishes are continually evolving thanks to a kitchen which is not afraid to push the boundaries. Every course is packed full of personality and originality, especially the stand-out desserts like delicious coconut parfait served in a mock-coconut shell made of Nyangbo chocolate. Luxury ingredients are generously used, flavours are measured and there’s an appealing range of different textures.

This Victorian townhouse has hosted a restaurant for many years and has long been a feature of Cambridge’s dining scene. Its current guardians are Sam and Alex, who have really made it their own. Sam’s food is poised, detailed and very precise, with his technical skill shining through in beautifully presented dishes such as roasted quail with a buttery vin jaune sauce. The house has a bright, understated style and the enthusiastic service team – who explain the make-up of the dishes in full – keep the atmosphere welcoming and relaxed.

This timbered 14th-century inn offers all you could want in a pub: it’s in a pretty little village; it’s got a lovely garden and terrace; there are cosy bedrooms; the friendly staff offer a warm welcome; and, of course, the food is terrific. Choose between the tasting menu, à la carte and, for bargain hunters, the brilliantly affordable set lunch. Throughout, there is skilled cooking on display, as with the opening snack of a top-notch Scotch egg with sauerkraut or the roasted halibut with saffron sauce.

Modern, simply furnished bedrooms are available so you can stay overnight and make your visit a real event.

A labour of love from the owners behind Restaurant Twenty-Two – and located right next door – this soothing space comes with plenty of neutral tones, giving it a simple, relaxing elegance. The opening selection of breads, dips and nibbles is a brilliant way to start, featuring highlights such as a beautifully made focaccia and a creamy whipped butter bean dip. Across the menu, the vibrant cooking moves with the seasons and pushes delicious natural flavours to the fore. The wonderful service team are engaging and knowledgeable in equal measure.

Those who like to see chefs at work will find their paradise at this 20-seater counter in the heart of Bury St Edmunds. A chef-led operation, where the kitchen team both cook and serve their dishes, it’s the brainchild of Spanish chef Ruben Aquilar Bel and his Hungarian-born wife Gabi, who makes the desserts and the excellent bread. Sharing plates are an option at lunch, while only a tasting menu is served for dinner, showcasing Spanish flavours with a degree of restrained creativity. "Yaya Bel’s Iberian Ham Croqueta" is a lovely snack to start, paying homage to Ruben’s grandmother.

A converted 17th-century house plays host to this town centre restaurant that – as the name would suggest – is firmly French at heart. The cooking is classic Gallic in base, with occasional modern and international touches on show. Seafood is a strength, with fine produce like fresh tail of turbot cooked with obvious skill by the kitchen team. Your final course will be a treat too, with desserts like brûlée of pear as well as excellent French cheeses from the trolley – accompanied by some fine wines by the glass.

This small, sweet building overlooks an abbey and a cathedral in the centre of this historic market town. Over the years, it has been a police station, a bus shelter and a florist; now it’s a pared-back restaurant with modern art adorning the whitewashed walls. Dishes could include cod cheek tempura or sopressini cacio e pepe – if you can’t make your mind up, go for the ‘Kitchen Selection’.

The Chubby Castor is a fine example, a 400-year-old village inn whose chocolate-box exterior belies its more modern, bright and somewhat glitzy interior design that stretches from a smart lounge into the intimate, linen-laid dining room. The cooking, overseen by experienced chef-owner Adebola Adeshina, is centred around time-honoured recipes that deliver on flavour. For dessert, look out for the wonderful Firetree chocolate with peanuts and caramel.

When the weather’s right, make a beeline for the lovely terrace of this beautiful 17th-century barn, which sits in a charming spot at the centre of a seven-acre vineyard, where there’s nothing but nature as far as the eye can see. Classically based cooking relies on well-sourced seasonal ingredients – many of which come from their own farm – and dishes are brought to the table by a charming team. The wine list includes a strong selection of classics and, of course, their own vintages too – plus the shop houses a plethora of goodies to take home.

The menu changes depending on the produce available, but you can expect gently modernised pub dishes, with steaks a feature of the menu, from sirloin to chateaubriand for two.
