Geoffrey and Katherine Smeddle have run this restaurant since 2006, but the history of this whitewashed inn extends back to the 18C. Geoffrey is an experienced and knowledgeable chef who has built up a close web of suppliers which, in conjunction with the seasons, virtually writes the menu. Expect to find ingredients like East Neuk crab, Black Isle lamb and Easter Grangemuir Farm strawberries. All of these are put to great use in vibrant, flavoursome dishes. Stylish, split-level bedrooms are available too, with breakfast served in your room.

From the genuine, professional service to the array of quality seafood, there is a lot to love about this smart restaurant decorated with a wicker shoal hanging from the ceiling and photos of fishermen on the walls. Fabulous produce, much of it Scottish, powers dishes that accentuate the flavours of their core ingredient with a few well-judged, finely made accompaniments – such as Shetland halibut accompanied by slow roasted tomatoes and salsa verde. As always with the best seafood restaurants, keep an eye on the specials board for more fresh delights.

Whilst only a short stroll away from Aberdeen’s ‘Granite Mile’ main street, there is a real neighbourhood feel to this brightly painted restaurant and bottle shop. The concise wine list is 100% Italian, while the cooking stretches a little beyond the country’s borders for a menu of attractively priced sharing plates. Whether it’s focaccia with white bean hummus, meaty mackerel with fennel or the playfully named ‘Mara-ncini’, the dishes deliver hearty flavours and well-judged combinations in abundance. A friendly, knowledgeable team add to the appeal.

This long-standing, passionately run restaurant never stands still, always investing and evolving over time. It’s still very much a family concern, with Garry Watson alone in the kitchen and his mother Maria handling the service with aplomb. There’s a modern feel to both the décor and the cooking, with the latter proving colourful and technically accomplished. Dishes really shine in their use of the Scottish larder, like local lamb with seasonal girolles. An interesting wine list and five bedrooms complete the picture.

You know what you're getting at Collinsons: an experienced chef showing his skill in delivering generous, consistently enjoyable dishes that are classic to the core. You're likely to find some of Chef-Owner Stephen Collinson's signatures recurring on the menu, like smoked haddock rarebit with leek or roasted venison with a port and cassis sauce. Whilst it may be tucked away down a quiet street, the restaurant itself is hard to miss thanks to its name etched across the floor-to-ceiling windows.

The simple combination of great quality seafood and commanding bay views is a sure-fire winner at this smart restaurant housed in a striking glass cube. Perched over St Andrews Bay, locally landed seafood is very much at the heart of the menu, which has a subtle Italian slant. The kitchen team know not to mess around with super ingredients like day boat halibut, allowing the natural flavours to come to the fore. The friendly service is of a similarly high standard.

A key feature of the Edinburgh dining scene for many years, Ondine has now made the move coastwards to the glorious St Andrews. Located inside the beautifully restored Seaton House hotel, its new location is befitting of the seafood-focused menu, with views over West Sands beach and close proximity to the East Neuk’s renowned fishing villages. Top produce from the area could include crab or lobster, with the dishes taking a classic approach to showing them off – look out for the likes of fish & shellfish soup and sole meunière.

There's a modern, Nordic edge to this appealing seafood-centric restaurant on the edge of St Andrews. The cooking both reflects the owner’s global travels and proudly pushes Scottish produce to the fore (look out for the ubiquitous Arbroath smokies). A range of menus includes a fixed-price lunch and an evening tasting option, showing off a wider range of dishes. Either way, the signature smoked lobster is available for a supplement, and "Nana's banoffee" provides a sweet-toothed finish. If you can't get a table, the same team run the Dune cocktail bar and 'seafood shack' up the road.

There’s been an inn of some kind on this site for well over 100 years, and its current incarnation is surely one of the most appealing. A fine restoration has left it with a chic bistro-style dining room at the front and a characterful, stone-walled bar to the rear – plus four bedrooms upstairs, ideal for exploring Fife’s beautiful East Neuk. Dishes executed with palpable care combine with warm, attentive service to ensure you’ll have a smile on your face – once you’ve made the tricky choice between the likes of asparagus panna cotta and Scrabster cod with curried bisque.

Queen Victoria made this area fashionable when she started visiting Balmoral Castle in the 1840s, and this restaurant inside The Fife Arms hotel certainly has its own brand of eclectic chic. Murano chandeliers hang from the ceiling and a huge stag oversees proceedings, while the staff are dressed in tartan that matches the cubist painted walls. Come in winter and you'll be welcomed by the glowing embers of the fire. Prime Scottish ingredients from lobster to venison are presented in classical dishes that often incorporate the smoky aromas of a wood fire.

Kevin Dalgleish is a well-known chef in Aberdeen and his restaurant occupies the spacious basement of a granite townhouse, in a quiet residential neighbourhood yet just minutes from the city centre. Kick off with a drink in the bar or by the wood burning stove. The kitchen use prime Scottish ingredients blended with French techniques to create good-looking dishes that deliver on flavour.

Tucked away in a city centre side street is this restaurant run by a friendly team with a genuine desire to please. Given the name, it's unsurprising to find a French bistro style to the décor, including simple wooden tables and wood panelling on the walls. The menu has a similarly Gallic influence, with time-honoured classics like pommes anna and crème brûlée to be found on the à la carte – yet there is a modernity and creativity in the cooking too, alongside technical skill from the kitchen team.

Opposite the harbour in this little fishing village, you'll find a thoroughly charming restaurant where East Neuk produce is cooked with the care it deserves. Seafood dominates both the menu and the décor, with the restaurant walls doubling up as gallery space for plenty of aqua-based art. The blackboard is the place to look for fresh daily specials, like plump and juicy langoustines or hake with seaweed butter sauce. If you’re local to the area, this could quickly become a favourite haunt – you may even go home with some new artwork.

There is a luxurious feel to this smartly renovated pub, where the cooking mixes the modern with the traditional. Among the well-executed dishes on the menu are some contemporary choices alongside recognisable classics like rib-eye steak, fish & chips and chicken liver parfait. Come at lunchtime to enjoy their classically served haggis, neaps and tatties, which is a real treat. Four bedrooms, cosy sitting rooms and an immaculate terrace complete the very pretty picture.
