The most scenic way to reach Ljubljana castle, which overlooks the city from the top of a hill, is by funicular – or by foot, if you like walking uphill. However you choose to get here, you’ll find this restaurant in the castle’s spacious inner courtyard, where it serves excellent local cuisine. Among the dishes that we enjoyed most, our favourite was the veal and curly kale – a superb fillet of veal served with the perfect accompaniment of curly kale and a fragrant mushroom cream.

As the name suggests, this restaurant enjoys a splendid location. Housed in the long-established See-Villa hotel, right by Lake Millstatt, it has a wonderful terrace that extends right to the water's edge! The elegant interior has floor-to-ceiling windows affording unobstructed views of the lake. The menu is rather diverse, featuring international, regional, traditional, seasonal fare – game and freshly caught fish from the lake take centre stage. The bar in the middle of the restaurant is sure to draw the eye.
