Nestled in the heart of a Welsh seaside town, this modern gastropub has a cosy, unpretentious feel with simple yet comfortable fixtures and fittings like faux-leather banquettes and padded velvet chairs. Set into the hillside, this attractive country house was built for a Lancashire industrialist around 1860 and is surrounded by beautiful terraced gardens and woodland. Its original features include a wood-panelled former billiards room, which now acts as the drawing room; follow this through into the restaurant, where you'll find the best seats are in the conservatory. The cooking's strength is drawn from the prime quality produce, be that Cornish monkfish or naturally delicious fruits for dessert. Stay overnight to make a proper occasion of your visit.

Nestled in the heart of a rural village, this whitewashed former drover's inn dates back all the way to the 17th century. The space is split into several rustic, characterful bar rooms and a more modern restaurant, with the same menus served throughout. The cooking leans towards the traditional, offering classic pub dishes such as fish & chips, confit duck leg or Welsh beef burger. If the warm chocolate mousse with pistachio ice cream is available for dessert, you must try it. Bedrooms are available and, unlike your usual village local, there’s an elephant buried in the garden!
