Entry & visa

China → Portugal

Visa required

A mainland China ordinary passport is not visa-free by itself; a Schengen visa is required before short tourist/business travel to Portugal.

A visa or visa exemption only allows the traveller to seek entry at the border; Schengen entry conditions still apply, including a travel document normally valid at least 3 months after intended departure from the Schengen Area and issued within the previous 10 years, justification of purpose/conditions of stay, sufficient means/return or onward arrangements, and no refusal alert. A US visa, US green card, UK visa, Japan visa, or APEC Business Travel Card is not by itself a Portugal/Schengen visa waiver.

Common questions

Can a Chinese passport holder with a valid US visa visit Portugal visa-free for a short tourist/business trip?

No. Mainland China ordinary passport holders require a visa under Schengen rules; the Schengen/Portugal rules found do not treat a US visa as a substitute visa waiver for Portugal. The traveller needs a valid Schengen visa before travel, unless they hold another Schengen-recognised residence/visa document.

Can a Chinese passport holder with a valid Schengen visa visit Portugal?

Yes, if the visa is still valid, has remaining entries and days of stay, and is not a limited-territorial-validity visa that excludes Portugal.

Does a US passport holder currently need ETIAS for a short trip to Portugal?

No as of 2026-06-18. ETIAS is still a planned travel authorisation expected to start in Q4 2026; until it starts, US passport holders continue to use the Schengen visa-free rule.

Does an APEC Business Travel Card give visa-free entry to Portugal?

No as a Portugal visa waiver. ABTC visa-free facilitation applies to pre-cleared APEC participating economies, and Portugal is not an APEC economy. The United States and Canada are transitional ABTC members, where ABTC provides facilitation such as lanes but no additional visa-free privileges.
