Leos by Stephan Brandl
Classic Cuisine, Contemporary · ★ Michelin
€€€€
Rustic wood features and original decorative touches combine to create an upscale, minimalist setting. Beautifully situated in the Bayerwaldhof spa hotel, which overlooks the village of Liebenstein, Leos is a modern take on a traditional Stube – a small, cosy dining space – with just four tables. The stylish look and pleasantly relaxed atmosphere are complemented by the carefully considered, clearly structured dishes that come courtesy of chef Stephan Brandl. Outstanding ingredients are prepared with the utmost precision and creativity, as exemplified by the delicately cooked Scandinavian pike

The culinary centrepiece at Hotel Oswald! This elegant fine dining restaurant is situated in the basement of the Landromantik Wellnesshotel Oswald located in Kaikenried, a Bavarian Forest village with a population of some 550 people. Thomas Gerber has been chef here since 2014, after holding a number of positions in renowned kitchens. His modern-inspired set menu comprises four to eight courses; classic in their foundations, the dishes are crafted with the utmost precision. The wonderfully fresh, perfectly glazed John Dory is a prime example of the subtlety with which he showcases top ingredie

It's no wonder this delightful restaurant in the city centre is a favorite among locals. The vibe is rustic and vibrant, the staff are exceptionally friendly and attentive, and the food is top-notch. Using select ingredients, the kitchen team delivers a contemporary take on Czech cuisine that is down-to-earth and packed with flavour. Signature items such as charred cabbage and short ribs are not to be missed. There is also a solid wine selection. In summer, the lovely covered terrace out front beckons.

This small restaurant may be a little off the beaten track, but it's well worth coming here for the regional cuisine. Quality ingredients are skilfully prepared to impart plenty of flavour. The restaurant rears its own cattle, hence the focus on beef – delicious dishes include beef tongue with celeriac purée and horseradish foam, or beef ribs with coleslaw and bread. The interior has a charmingly rustic quality; in summer, dine out on the terrace, which is surrounded by greenery. Should you wish to soak up this rural idyll a little longer, there is also a campsite.

As if straight out of a picture book, this beautiful inn stands on the edge of the forest. Inside, a warm and welcoming atmosphere reigns; outside, there is a charming terrace. Ernst Hunger Jr and his wife Brigitte run this long-standing family business with great dedication, delighting diners with good food and friendly service. The cooking is regional but also features Mediterranean and contemporary influences – from steak and fish to locally hunted game and vegetarian options. The dishes are delicious and very reasonably priced. The bottom line: this is a place people love – so be sure to r

This restaurant stands on the premises of the Pilsner Urquell brewery. Diners are seated in a lofty vaulted cellar featuring a modern-meets-rustic decor and a striking service station in the middle of the space. Modern Czech cuisine and traditional hearty beer-hall dishes are all meticulously prepared and packed with flavour. The chefs put a premium on regional ingredients sourced from local suppliers. Of course, a good beer goes well with it. Tip: For special occasions, you can book the ‘Schalender’ in the brewery's lager cellars. Also interesting: brewery museum and shop.

Once you have located the slightly hidden entrance, you find yourself in a world of fermentation, pickling and preserving – countless jars of various vegetables, mushrooms and the like are everywhere you look. The restaurant is pleasingly pared back, and some tables afford an interesting view over the pass into the kitchen. They source all ingredients from the region and, wherever possible, process these themselves. You can clearly see their sustainability concept in action here. The menu is seasonal, and the friendly waitstaff are happy to advise you as you choose.
