This little ‘gem’ of a restaurant, set on the fourth floor of the Bulgari Hotel, is elegance personified, with understated, clean-lined décor and stunning views over the Dubai skyline. 18 counter seats make for a comfortable, intimate meal, where sixth-generation sushi master Masahiro Sugiyama and his team show off their considerable knife skills. Taking the individual tastes of their guests into consideration, they blend them with prime ingredients imported from Japan to create a rich omakase experience unique to each diner. In the residential neighbourhood of Al Wasl, away from the city’s impressive skyscrapers, is a kushiyaki-inspired but friendly restaurant, offering far more than just grilled skewered meats and vegetables. The contemporary Japanese menu also covers a wide range of well-priced snacks, sushi and ramen, like their Tantamen ramen, raw salmon with crispy black rice and Wagyu steamed bun. The variety and excellent quality of global ingredients are grilled to perfection over oak, hickory or hay, each of which impart their own distinctive flavour. The talented kitchen has the know-how to keep things simple, enhancing the skilfully cooked dishes subtly with well-judged seasoning.

This simple and popular restaurant has an open kitchen, a pared-back interior and a laid-back vibe; grab a seat outside overlooking the Jumeirah Fishing Harbour. Their strapline is ‘making complex simple' and the Asian small plates deliver fresh, vibrant flavours with a strong nod to Japan; 3-4 per person is about right. A must try dish is their Chilean seabass with beurre blanc cream, green mint and red chili pepper. Be sure to bring some shades and a hat, as you may have to wait a while to be seated at this fairly busy eatery.
