From the parking lot, you can smell the sweet smoke that billows out of the restaurant’s two roaring, wood-burning ovens. In what feels like a backyard oasis fit with a spacious patio, find a hazy, sun-lit dining room where Chef Chris Hastings pulls inspiration from Spain and Latin America. Much of the food is cooked in cast-iron skillets. From Spanish omelets dotted with chorizo vinaigrette to charred empanadas to finely-seared scallops set in ajo blanco sauce, the tapas-style menu does not shy away from flavor and is fully designed for sharing. For dessert, spiced molasses crème brûlée makes

This rambunctious pizzeria in Mercantile on Morris is a stylish spot built out of hard, warehouse floors and exposed brick. In lieu of traditional preparations, the kitchen takes a maximalist approach to toppings. Pesto, mortadella and pistachios or chorizo with romesco and chopped Castelvetrano olives arrive on a fine sourdough crust that’s been turned and crisped in a hot electric oven. Though the pies are serious and sizeable, meatballs are also a must-order for the table, as are desserts. Think pistachio tiramisu or a nostalgic ice cream bar dipped in chocolate. A fun selection of natural

The makings of a great day begin with lunch at this airy raw bar that gets all the details just right. In downtown Birmingham next door to their flagship restaurant Helen, Rob and Emily McDaniel direct their attention to pristine seafood and freshly shucked oysters. Whole-fish butchery and a passion for seasonality yield superb dividends, and one could make feast out of a series of small plates. Start with the clever seafood charcuterie, which includes the likes of wahoo salami and cobia sausage. Gulf coast crab bound with corn remoulade sitting atop a perfectly ripe tomato is a Southern celeb

La Fête

This idyllic bistro makes good on its promise of comfort and quality. Tiled flooring, quaint little tables and cabinets lined with wine bottles match the French ethos. Thanks to a partnership with sister spot Bandit bakery, anything involving bread or pastry is worth ordering: flaky croissants, tomato and goat cheese tarts, fruit galettes. Roasted half chicken with potato gratin is an assured crowd-pleaser but so too is the dry-aged cheeseburger or the boudin blanc with aligot potatoes. Relaxed servers add to the allure of a restaurant that welcomes you as you are at any time of the day.

With history dating back to 1994, Chris and Idie Hastings have cooked their way into the very fabric of the city’s culinary tapestry. Now located in trendy Pepper Place, the bustling space features a curved chef’s counter in the kitchen as well as ample bar and table seating. Their respect for the seasons means that the menu is constantly on the move. Come winter, look for hearty preparations like rabbit pappardelle with butternut squash or ancho-rubbed Iberico pork chop with apple chutney. In the summer, everyone comes for the tomato salad, which features a towering stack of heirloom tomatoes

Automatic Seafood and Oysters

Chef/owner Adam Evans opened Automatic Oyster & Seafood in Birmingham's Lakeview neighborhood in 2019 and has never looked back. Named after the previous tenant, Automatic Sprinkler, the 5,000-square-foot space is designed to serve a crowd. Evans spotlights regional seafood, specifically fin fish, but you'll also find Southern dishes and other choices here too. First order of business is to order oysters from the raw bar menu before sampling seared, dry-aged scallops in a rutabaga puree. Blackened amberjack with a crab beurre blanc is a good main dish, but don't skip the collard greens cooked

Chef Rob McDaniel and his wife Emily built this downtown Birmingham restaurant as an homage to Rob's maternal grandmother who gathered her family for meals that she cooked over her indoor grill. Here at Helen, many of the dishes feature grilled elements. The menu is concise and showcases plates with Southern and international flair. Warm angel biscuits served warm alongside a quenelle of whipped cane syrup butter will soothe your soul. Enjoy a bowl of comfort with braised Peruvian lima beans in a golden broth with coal-roasted rapini and garlic chili oil. Cobia is beautifully seared on the plan

In a discreet corner of Birmingham’s Pizitz Food Hall, Chef Jacob Stull runs this modern dining room decorated in handsome blues and whites. Some walk-ins snag a seat at the bar and order à la carte. Others settle into the booths for a much more involved, French-inspired tasting menu. Brioche-crusted salmon with lemon beurre blanc is classic in style while the prime ribeye marinated in banana vadouvan miso shows a more adventurous side. While some moments have more style than substance, the kitchen’s penchant for risk-taking is noteworthy. An upbeat playlist, along with relaxed, attentive serv
