Osteria Francescana

On arriving in Via Stella, one immediately senses how naturally this restaurant frees itself from frills and accolades, embracing instead a sober elegance, enhanced by major works of contemporary art that reflect Massimo Bottura’s personal passion. The same measured language returns in the kitchen, where greatness is expressed through control, balance and vision: a narrative that begins in Modena and Emilia before reaching towards the great international classics, reinterpreted by the chef with that playful lightness which reminds us that food should first and foremost be pleasure, memory and

Situated in a period palazzo near one of Modena’s oldest churches (the façade of Santa Maria della Pomposa dates from the medieval period and the church was rebuilt in 1717), this recently restored, modern and minimalist restaurant has just nine tables and is adorned with contemporary paintings on its walls. There are numerous options here: a tasting menu which focuses on historic Emilian recipes (tortellini in capon broth, tagliatelle in a Modena-style ragù etc); a second menu featuring the chef’s latest dishes; a vegetarian option; and an à la carte which includes many of the restaurant’s ho

Inside Maria Luigia, the welcoming country house envisioned by Massimo Bottura and Lara Gilmore to host a cosmopolitan clientele, the cuisine of Jessica Rosval revolves around fire, presenting dishes that are both visually striking and deeply appetizing. Her philosophy celebrates the finest local produce and the estate’s own farm, with cooking techniques that find their signature expression over live embers. Exemplary is the smoked meat selection, alternating various cuts and culminating in a wood-grilled beef rib, intense and succulent. Service is warm and attentive, while the knowledgeable a

Creative dynamism in the very heart of the city: this is Patrizia, a restaurant named after the chef’s mother. Here the journey is singular — available in either a complete or abbreviated form — and evolves with the turning of the seasons; alongside it, the lighting, music and dining room details transform as well, following precisely the vision of young chef Tommaso Zoboli. A continuous movement of ideas and exploration, designed to satisfy himself whilst delighting his guests. The progression of dishes reveals an exuberant kitchen, rich with references to diverse thoughts and cultures, unfett

Hosteria Giusti

Hidden away in the back room of the historic Giusti delicatessen, which has been famous for over four centuries, is a small dining room with just four tables. Simple and pleasantly retro, this is th perfct place to soak up the authentic spirit of Modena’s culinary tradition. The menu is a sincere tribute to Emilian cuisine: it begins with charcuterie, mostly from Mora Romagnola pigs reared in the wild, accompanied by the ever-present gnocco fritto and fragrant pasta fritters. This is followed by fresh pasta, the star of iconic dishes such as tortellini in capon broth and tagliolini with cheese

Intimate and vibrant settings, where the smell of warm bread and the clinking of glasses convey the simple philosophy with which Massimo Bottura renews his love for Modena and Emilia. The menu, which includes both classic dishes and tasting menus, starts from the roots: the intense flavour of 36-month aged pancetta caressed by the sweetness of Campanina apple “mostarda”, or the velvety creaminess of “zuppa inglese”. Then the journey opens up to creativity, with unexpected touches such as grey mullet “alla cacciatora”, which releases aromas of herbs and the sea. The tortellini, made by the pati

Trattoria Pomposa - Al Re gras

It’s not just the competitive prices that will bring you back, but above all the fragrant authenticity of Emilian cooking. Among the first courses, the “golden” specialties stand out, namely the fresh egg pastas: tortellini with 24-month Parmigiano cream and traditional lasagne verdi. The main courses are dominated by the indulgent cotechino with stewed beans and an impeccable bollito misto, while the ideal finale is entrusted to the celebrated zuppa inglese. In warmer months, tables in the intimate Piazza della Pomposa lend an even more charming atmosphere.

Just a minute’s drive from the Campogalliano motorway exit, this ultra-classic restaurant has made a name for itself over the years thanks to its excellent price-quality ratio, which has remained surprisingly stable even at times when inflation has been high. The menu features numerous traditional Emilian dishes — gnocco fritto, tortellini, and Emilian-style “fritto misto” — alongside some of the great classics of Italian cuisine. The finale is left to the cake counter, situated right at the entrance to the restaurant: a riot of homemade desserts that invites you to choose whatever takes your
