A short distance from the Atalanta stadium, with the convenience of private parking, this Bergamasque venue defies easy categorisation: to call it simply a corner of Sicily would be to do it a disservice, as the proposal goes beyond any single regional identity. The island’s imprint nonetheless remains clear, reinterpreted with contemporary sensitivity through a series of dishes that range across land and sea, at times drawing on street food, as with the outstanding grilled stigghiola, served with escarole and a lively sweet-and-sour spiced extract. One must climb the steep, scenic Via San Vigilio, just steps from the beating heart of Città Alta, immersed in an exclusive hillside setting, to reach Villa Elena, one of the most majestic residences in the Bergamo hills. The garden terrace opens like a balcony suspended over the panorama, where on clear days lunch begins caressed by light and the fragrance of fresh air. Inside, amid stuccoes that resemble velvet, mirrors multiplying reflections, cool marbles, and frescoes that tell stories, the cuisine of Marco Galtarossa comes to life, the fruit of a creative dialog with Italy’s most decorat

Situated in the hills just beyond Bergamo, this smart, elegant and well-run restaurant has the Manzoni brothers (Alex and Vittorio) at the helm in the kitchen, where they create some of the most interesting cuisine in the region, while the capable Giovanna Danzo oversees the excellent service in the dining room. Creative and surprising, the dishes here are striking for their complex and original flavours, which combine vegetables with a clever use of herbs and spices without overwhelming the palate. The chargrilled veal sweetbreads (slightly crunchy on the outside and soft inside) are deliciou

In the small piazza that welcomes the funicular’s arrival station – with a small public parking area right at the top of the climb – lies a venue of retro charm, with Anglo-Saxon touches and an authentic soul. It serves as both bar and restaurant, where tradition meets modern accents in generous, thoughtfully composed dishes. The undisputed stars are the meats, accompanied by bread and desserts made strictly in-house. In warmer months, service moves to the panoramic terrace, offering enchanting views over the city (and, for the more intrepid, even in winter when the sun permits). Inside, two r

Run by the reliable and experienced “Titta” in the kitchen and Silvia front of house, this elegant, contemporary-style restaurant serves simple, modern dishes in which fresh, seasonal ingredients take centre stage. The focus here is on fish, with a menu that includes a fine selection of raw seafood options, as well as a simple yet tasty sea bass carpaccio which cooks quickly on a bed of hot porcini mushrooms.
