Every pizza at this area darling begins with a nod to Neapolitan tradition: start with the perfect dough and bake it into a crust that remains crisp and light right through the middle. This careful process and that almighty oven shipped from Italy can be observed with longing through the glass-walled kitchen. The dining room also conjures the homeland through Mediterranean-blue murals and furnishings. To top that crust, many pizzas go on to include premium ingredients like San Marzano tomatoes and fior di latte, which arrives several times a week from Italy. Alternatively, deck your pie with a

Mori Nozomi
Japanese, Sushi · ★ Michelin
$$$$
A note of elegant simplicity pervades the experience at this minimalist eight-seat counter, overseen by Chef Nozomi Mori and her streamlined, adroitly hospitable team. The unassuming space and soft-spoken service serve as a backdrop for an artfully prepared omakase that highlights purity and refinement. The lack of superfluous embellishment puts the spotlight on exceptional seafood (flown in several times a week from Japan) accented by seasonal produce from the Santa Monica farmer’s market. Beginning with a perfectly silky chawanmushi with gingko nut, attention to detail sets the meal apart, s

Mélisse
Modern French · ★★ Michelin
$$$$
Since opening in 1999, Chef Josiah Citrin’s flagship has been a Santa Monica mainstay. Through its many evolutions, the restaurant has sought to offer a certain kind of fine dining experience that will never go out of style. Slip in through a discreet side entrance to enter the enclosed space that combines a vibe-y underground feel with classic luxury. One can expect the finest cutlery and plates, gorgeous presentations, plenty of tableside saucing, and a level of French decadence that borders on gratuitous. The results are indulgent. Truffles, wagyu, uni, and crab weave their way across intri

Californian · ★ Michelin

Although located in the same building as Chef Josiah Citrin's sister restaurant Mélisse, in lieu of its sibling’s tasting menu-only format, the offerings here afford more choice, with a modest prix-fixe alongside à la carte options. Chef Ken Takayama's cuisine sends forth signature combinations of French technique with an abundance of California's seasonal produce, focusing on updated takes on classically rooted flavors with modern, global touches.Spendthrifts will revel in the opulent caviar and truffle add-ons; but even without a dollop or shaving of luxury; the impressive cooking here, such

Lulu

Think dining at a museum requires toting a silver tray? Meet Lulu. This charming restaurant may be nestled within a courtyard at the Hammer Museum, but there's nothing ho-hum about it. Helmed by David Tanis with a little help from none other than Alice Waters, Lulu rewards guests who take a midday break from grokking the art. Fresh produce on display is more than just a design element; it's a hint at the philosophy of this spot, where the three-course and à la carte menus shift daily.Solid cooking leans heavily into the seasons while letting the ingredients shine. The Mulberry
Korean Contemporary
$$$
The Mulberry hasn't been open long, but this Korean American restaurant in Sawtelle is a hit. It could be the trendy look, with dark wood floors and tables. It might be the full-service bar with a terrific wine list and cocktail program. Or maybe it's the approachable but spot-on menu. No matter the reason, make a reservation, since seats fill quickly. Steamed pork and chive dumplings or kimchi pancake topped with bean sprouts and herbs are good openers before charcoal-grilled pork or beef short ribs with a variety of accompaniments. Save room for their hotteok a la mode, a caramelized cinnamo

Killer Noodle

This sister spot to Tsujita specializes in tan tan ramen, a Japanese favorite that’s equal parts tantanmen (dipping ramen) and spicy Sichuan dan dan noodles. Rich and creamy, each bowl features springy noodles and jammy eggs. Swing for the mala version for an added layer of intensity. If you’d rather slurp sans soup, bowls can be ordered “dry” as well. The “killer” in the restaurant's moniker comes from the range of spice levels offered to diners — opt for the six out of six, and you’ll be grateful for the pitcher of water provided to each table. Heaping portions of chili oil are matched by a

KOJIMA
Japanese
$$$$
KOJIMA is truly a hidden gem, poised on the second story of a Sawtelle strip mall. The homey space seats a handful of diners at a counter wrapped around the open kitchen where Chef Hayato Kojima works wonders. There is no fixed or printed menu, and chef’s English is limited, however the warm staff explains every dish with enthusiasm. The menu changes daily, dictated by sourcing for peak freshness and quality, but could include dishes like fried longtooth grouper, or gently poached Japanese clam served over springy kudzu starch sōmen. Crispy grilled unagi is a delight, and a final savory course
