Little Coyote
barbecue · Bib
$$
You could come to this St. Elmo spot for its view of Lookout Mountain alone, but then you'd miss out on some seriously good Tex-Mex cooking. Erik and Amanda Niel's Little Coyote is all about smoked meats, house-made corn tortillas and tempting cocktails. Familiar favorites like fajitas and queso make an appearance, and since it's all intended for sharing, order with abandon. Consider kicking off the meal with a stuffed avocado, made vegetarian or with brisket or tender, smoky carnitas. Then tuck into a tostada layered with braised oxtail. Finished with a fried egg and cactus chow chow, it's fa

Main Street Meats
American

The name truly says it all. Located on Main Street in Chattanooga, this spot is indeed all about meat. It's equal parts butcher shop and restaurant, and their whole animal butchery mindset is reflected on the menu. House-made sausages and boudin made with pork and rice and served with house-made crackers are a perfect introduction before meat-forward mains like a burger and a selection of steaks. There's a cut for everyone here, and each one arrives with perfect grill marks and house-made tallow fries. Need something green? Order a side of bok choy or broccoli before indulging in chocolate gel

Easy Bistro

$$$
This beloved locals' haunt is tucked into downtown Chattanooga, and Easy Bistro is just that. Comfortable but unfussy, this spot from Erik and Amanda Niel has been around for more than two decades. They open early with oyster hour, and it's always a hit. The menu is American at heart, with oysters and small plates, pasta, meat and side dishes, all created with a seasonal mindset. Tagliatelle with Florida rock shrimp and bottarga in a lemon butter sauce is given a boost of texture courtesy of Appalachian rye breadcrumbs, while pot de creme or ricotta doughnuts are worthy desserts. .

The Rosecomb

Set in a charming 1920s cottage just above downtown Chattanooga, The Rosecomb isn't just adorable, it's fun and a little bit funky too. The owners have fashioned a likable spot with loads of character, where the menu looks to Appalachia for inspiration and the bar program is strong. Expect quirky, creative cooking. Kilt greens panzanella with root vegetables topped with cornbread croutons and bacon vinaigrette offers a bold, Southern-inflected take on a classic bread salad, while a slow-cooked pulled chicken sandwich with crunchy slaw and diced pepperoncini is just plain delicious. Judith

It's a woman's world at Chef/owner Julia Sullivan's Judith, named for the first woman to matriculate at Sewanee: The University of the South. It's just off the main road that runs through this sleepy college town and is set in a large, bright warehouse that was once the Steam Laundry for the university. Inside, find a stylish blend with contemporary furniture and touches adding warmth to the industrial space. Chef Sullivan's cooking is talented, but the menu doesn't take itself too seriously, delivering crowd-pleasing dishes like chicken Milanese that isn't a strict interpretation but is just

Lunch is an inviting operation run by Chef Mallory Tubbs and boasts a country store charm that's thoroughly authentic. The structure dates back to the 1930s, and features cream walls and wainscotting, a variety of wood tables, and displays of local vegetables, jams and honey, and dry goods. This Sewanee operation lives up to its name, open from morning to afternoon and serving a concise menu featuring products from local farms that may offer up the likes of seasonal salads, huevos rancheros or a steak sandwich on house-made baguette with Gruyère, tender peppers and onions, and chimichurri sauc

Salt Smokehouse
Barbecue, Fusion

In the sparkling Lincoln Mill district, this family-owned barbecue spot is out to satisfy. High ceilings, white walls and ample seating make for a Spartan vibe. The menu, by contrast, is full of personality, as it pulls global inspiration from all over, starting with a roster of hearty appetizers like brisket fritters with chihuahua cheese or fried soft-shell crab bao sliders. Sandwiches and burgers also tempt, but for the purists among us, stick with the fundamentals. A fatty slice of prime-grade smoked brisket cooked overnight cuts like custard and doesn’t need a lick of sauce. Soft, tender

The husband-and-wife team of Stephanie and Matt Mell have a burgeoning empire of restaurants, bars and retail specialty shops, including this hit in downtown Huntsville. Meanwhile Chef Juventino Manuel is behind the stove, and his Mexican roots and training in Asian kitchens are both reflected on the menu. He's well known for his ossobuco, but don't sleep on the taco tucked with wagyu beef and aji amarillo aioli or the Korobuta pork belly atop a mole that will have you sopping up every last bit—preferably with their house-made cornbread that comes in a cast iron skillet with honey butter and s
