In this elegant restaurant close to a busy square behind the ancient Panathenaic Stadium, enjoy highly professional service, attractive vaulted dining rooms, and two Mediterranean-inspired terraces perfect for alfresco dining and a romantic candlelit supper. The cooking here is centred around elaborate and highly visual contemporary French cuisine that is showcased via an array of à la carte dishes as well as on an enticing “Discovery” tasting menu. Seasonal produce is very much to the fore here, although some ever-popular ingredients (crab, langoustine, lamb, chocolate etc) feature all year r

Located at the foot of the Parthenon, this restaurant comes as something of a surprise for various reasons. Firstly, for the stunning view from its terrace; secondly, for its setting, in a historic building that was once the country’s first inn, with a decor that ensures a unique experience enabling guests to view its historic vestiges through the glass floor in the dining room; and, lastly, its cuisine, the main attraction, which comes courtesy of chef Patron Petros Dimas and which showcases the country’s gastronomic heritage through dishes that are creative and impeccable technique. This restaurant occupies the former family home of the German architect Ernst Zillers, who came to Athens to design some of its public buildings, fell in love with the city and remained here for the rest of his life. The building, which is situated next to the Greek Orthodox cathedral and has now been converted into a hotel (Zillers Boutique Hotel), boasts a rooftop terrace and multi-purpose Roof Garden with fine view of the cathedral and the Acropolis. The Zillers restaurant is only open in the evening and chef Vasilis Roussos offers two tasting menus: Synecdoche and Synthesis, both with crea

There are just a few restaurants capable of creating a connection between food, nature and a love of one’s country, but here chef Tasos Mantis manages to express his full passion for all three through his cooking. The experience starts with a presentation of the stars of the show here, namely the aromatic herbs used in Soil’s dishes, many of which are sourced from the vegetable garden tended by the chef’s father. The cuisine is highlighted on a single tasting menu which showcases creativity and quality, which can be enjoyed either at the chef’s table, in the bright lounge or in the pleasant wi

If the prospect of lunch or dinner on the elegant terrace of a hotel appeals to you, with the added bonus of background piano music and the eternal Acropolis as a backdrop, Tudor Hall is definitely a good option, especially for a romantic candlelit dinner – but make sure you book ahead. Here, on the 7th floor of the King George Hotel, next to the central Syntagma Square, chef Nikos Livadias showcases his contemporary version of Greek cuisine, based on a concise à la carte menu plus a tasting menu. The end result is a superb combination of well-balanced dishes that display strong technical abil

Although located away from the tourist heart of the city, Jerár is winning new fans thanks to the cuisine on offer here. In this spacious and informal restaurant with a kitchen that opens out on to the dining room, chef Charis Nikolouzos showcases internationally inspired cooking that combines Greek roots (thanks to his connections with small-scale producers who supply him with his fresh ingredients) and French and Italian culinary detail. On the à la carte, featuring abundant dishes made for sharing, we particularly liked the Cacio e Pepe with “Mikrolimano Shrimp”.

This new Nolan 2.0 version of the restaurant has chef Michalis Nourloglou in charge of the kitchen, where he follows the same concept and conjures up a combination of Greek cuisine with other dishes from around the world. The menu here is simple and concise, with options that include sea bream tartare, made with fresh fish of the day and served with dried fruits and a hint of citrus, and the mouthwatering shredded and breaded beef cheeks on a bed of cream along with a topping of truffles. The ambience here exudes relaxed joviality and a light, airy feel thanks to the large windows, and is enha
