Chef/owner Michael Rafidi and team are behind this casual, all-day concept in Georgetown where Levantine cooking takes center stage with the help of a wood-burning oven. There’s almost always a line stretching out the front door — and for good reason. The morning menu features pastries, breakfast sandwiches and shakshuka. Come afternoon, find pitas stuffed with smoked chicken and pickles, creamy dips like hummus with lamb and date molasses plus vibrant mezzes. The pita chips alone are irresistible. To finish, coconut cardamon iced coffee or soft serve ice cream both make for compelling choices

Kappo

Japanese

$$$$

Located a few steps below street level, this restaurant from Chef Minoru Ogawa has a minimalist decor. The counter faces the sunken kitchen where an eight-course Kappo-style tasting menu with a focus on Wagyu woven with seafood is the main event. The kitchen is exacting when it comes to flavors, but their style is approachable. Go ahead and add caviar and uni if you're feeling flush, but you won't need them to feel well taken care of here. Wagyu tataki is lightly seared, tossed in an egg yolk soy sauce and topped with wasabi foam, then toro is set atop garlic ponzu and sided by a dashi-poached

It may be part market, but there’s nothing remotely pedestrian about BlackSalt. This lively restaurant’s menu manages to be both approachable and interesting, with sublime shellfish and a concise selection trawling coast to continent for inspiration. Begin with Addie’s mussels bathed in a well-balanced broth—you’ll be sopping up every last drop. Then move on to the ever-warming, saffron-tinged Provençal market stew bobbing with the day’s finest catch, which may include juicy mussels, tender shrimp and flaky swordfish, among others. Finish this aquatic feast with a slice of their tart key lime

Few restaurants embody this neighborhood more aptly than 1789, named for the year Georgetown University was founded. A de-facto reservation for students and their visiting parents, this historic Federal period townhouse is a quaint labyrinth of six dining rooms spread across three floors. Each is imbued with a sense of history and pedigree—and all under the watchful gaze of veteran servers who are effortlessly in control. The kitchen team is adept, talented, and successfully keeps pace. Dishes lean on classic French and American flavors. Recent highlights included a warm vichyssoise with leeks,

Fiola Mare

Perched along the Potomac River, Chef Fabio Trabocchi's salute to seafood enjoys privileged views that never get old. With more than a decade of history behind it, this nautical dining room is built for crowds with private rooms and expansive patio space to boot. Still, the well-oiled kitchen keeps a firm grasp on its strengths, preparing high-quality seafood and pasta with care and class. Vibrant salads, zippy crudos and expertly grilled fish delight, alongside the signature lobster ravioli, a rich triumph that will never leave the menu. Such pleasures and views are not without expense, but r

Lutèce

Lucky are the denizens of Georgetown to have this delightful bistro in their backyard. With bottles of wine lining the shelves above, the dining room is a charming, date-night oasis, thanks to exposed brick, hardwood floors and a pressed-tin ceiling. Not far behind the décor, the seasonal menu is tight-knit, offering only a handful of appetizers and mains that could change on a moment’s notice. Chef Matt Conroy and his team are turning out an impressive array of cleverly rendered hits, like scallop crudo sauced with blood orange and yuzu koshō and gently cooked cod plated with razor clam-studd
