The French Laundry

Contemporary, French · ★★★ Michelin

$$$$

Thomas Keller’s legendary destination still doesn’t miss a beat. In fact this may be known as the greatest cooking space in America, as every aspect is carefully determined—from the counter height to the flowing lines of the ceiling. Chef Keller continues to pair classic French techniques with wildly fresh ingredients in a setting that is a perfect storm of restaurant greatness—we should all be so lucky to score a reservation here. The cornet filled with crème fraîche and topped with Atlantic salmon tartare is an impressive start before moving on to dishes like Atlantic pompano amandine, sweet

Ciccio

Italian, Pizza · Bib

A pleasant contrast to the sleek new spots around town, this dining room's country-style curtains and front porch are a ticket to another era—and a hot ticket at that, since tables are hard to come by. Indeed, this Yountville gem could pass off as a John Wayne film set, with its wood-framed, 1916-era grocery look. Blistered, puffy crusts boast a tangy flavor of fermentation and a hint of smoke from the fire, an excellent vehicle for hearty toppings like crispy cabbage leaves paired with thinly sliced pancetta and melty gouda. House-made pasta, like chitarra with 'nduja sausage, clams and pea t

Auberge du Soleil

Californian · ★ Michelin

$$$$

Auberge du Soleil is one of the first restaurants to elevate the Napa Valley to greatness, and Chef Robert Curry has been ensuring its legacy with cooking that is the very definition of Californian cuisine. As might be expected from this perch overlooking the mountains and vineyards, the wine list is notable and proudly showcases local growers. The chef's tasting menu invites guests to control how their experience unfolds. Dishes may include Nantucket Bay scallops in a green garlic sauce or squid ink linguine topped with Mendocino uni and served over lobster claw meat. The lineup dazzles all th

Press

Modern Cuisine · ★ Michelin

$$$$

Set just off Highway 29, Press offers a composed expression of contemporary Californian dining in a grand Wine Country setting. The soaring dining room, anchored by a fireplace and warm wood tones, feels elegant without any stiffness, making it well suited to long, unhurried meals. The cooking favors clarity and precision, allowing pristine ingredients to lead. Dishes like charcoal-grilled lobster, ricotta gnudi finished with a tableside pour of consommé and American wagyu rib cap show a kitchen confident in balance and restraint, not excess. Desserts, including a milk-chocolate mousse, reflec

Kenzo

Japanese · ★ Michelin

$$$$

Focused on an offering of enticing seasonal Japanese cuisine, Kenzo Tsujimoto's downtown Napa dining room is a place to wash away worldly cares. Designed by his wife Natsuko, this space is serene and minimal. The best seats are at the long counter, where diners can chat with the chefs and watch their meal being prepared. The kaiseki experience is composed, elegantly paced and may feature dishes such as steamed scallop dumpling in a fragrant dashi made with three-year-aged katsuobushi, or seared A5 Wagyu tenderloin with burdock root miso. Desserts, like their honey ice cream topped with candied

Enclos

Contemporary, Californian · ★★ Michelin

$$$$

This custom-designed domain of Chef Brian Limoge exudes cozy sophistication and is a respectful retooling of a late 1800s Victorian structure in downtown Sonoma. This tasting menu marries global flavors, refined technique and exceptional ingredients, including produce sourced from affiliated Stone Edge Farm, all shot through with subtle nods to the chef’s New England roots. Take, for example, the signature clam chawanmushi which evokes the spirit of chowder. The team shows a masterful hand with grilling, and the complementing sauces surprise and delight, as in luscious hearth-roasted quail ado

North Block

The space, at the edge of the villa-like expanse of the luxury hotel of the same name, is relaxed and airy. It is an ideal wine country retreat.Seafood specialties, like mussels with chardonnay butter sauce and grilled bread, or oysters on the half shell with house-made hot sauce, are a highlight. Slow-fermented wood-fired pizzas are always a good idea, and pastas, like a traditional tagliatelle bolognese, show equal care. For dessert, a caramel budino made with Macallan Scotch, paired with pistachio and chantilly cream, strikes a sophisticated and satisfying note.

Bouchon

This may be quaint Yountville, but Thomas Keller's French bistro paints a scene that is straight out of Paris. Red velvet booths, marble tables, polished brass and a tiled floor make for a buzzy scene. The next-door bakery is equally busy with its own lines often stretching out the front door. True to form, the cooking is righteously, unapologetically indulgent. Salade Lyonnaise studded with bacon lardons, flat iron steak with French fries, mussels steamed with white wine, boudin blanc with potato puree — the classics are well accounted for. Finish strong with profiteroles matched with vanilla
