La Table de Philippe Girardon
Modern Cuisine · ★ Michelin
€€€€
The fourth generation is at the helm of this family business, established in a splendid 18C edifice surrounded by grounds, which was once the holiday home of the bishops of Lyon. The inventive food is the consummate work of a chef who has had a Michelin star since 1993 and who became a MOF in 1997. Top quality regional produce, surgically precise craftsmanship in a classical vein and the occasional more modern technique depict the culinary ethos. This welcoming scene provides the backdrop to dishes such as a soup of frog’s legs with mushrooms and wild garlic, Grenoble-style arctic char, slowly

La Pyramide - Maison Henriroux
Modern Cuisine · ★★ Michelin
€€€€
Originally a modest inn opened in 1822, this Vienne institution was made famous by the emblematic couple of Mado and Fernand Point in the early 20C. It was taken over by Patrick Henriroux in 1989 and has since continued to evolve on his watch: a designer decor in the dining area, the addition of a second restaurant (PH3), a charming hotel and a cocktail bar… As for the food, classical dishes are given a highly precise and pared-back contemporary twist: artichokes and European lobster, the Camus and baby varieties stuffed with meat from the claws, the tail with its coral ; milk-fed lamb with Pr

The restaurant at Le Cottage is the latest venture of Philippe Girardon, a chef whose passion and experience are beyond dispute. He creates bistro - style fare using lovely fresh ingredients. Savour these in the large dining area or outside on the terrace in the shade of the plane trees.

Perched on the heights of Chasse-sur-Rhône, the Domaine de Gorneton weaves a magical bucolic spell. This 17C stone-built manor houses guestrooms, a swimming pool and a restaurant, whose name is a nod to the waterlilies on the pond. The simple and inviting dining area features light parquet floors and exposed rafters. Chef Loïc Plestin (ex La Loge Bertin in Manosque) sculpts seriously succulent fare (particularly the jus): chicken fricassee with melt-in-the-mouth spinach, fragrant tomato jus and mushrooms; compressed apple terrine, white chocolate ganache and Breton biscuit.

Modern Cuisine

Next-door to La Pyramide, the décor of the Henriroux family’s second venture, entwined in a leafy verdant slant, boasts a conservatory that leads onto the patio. A concise but varied menu stars top-drawer ingredients: aromatic poultry terrine with Mirabelle plum seasoning; tataki of tuna grilled on a Japanese BBQ with smashed potato, crunchy fennel and a rhubarb-laced dressing. A tasty vegetarian lineup is also available. A buzzy vibe and slick service add the final touch to this pleasant culinary interlude.

Alquimia
Modern Cuisine, Creative
€€€
Not far from the banks of the Rhône, this historic building (parts of which are 18C) ticks all the boxes: high ceilings, exposed stone and brick walls and, at the helm, a young Franco-Paraguayan couple with bags of personality. Chef Horacio Zàrate Franco, who has a flair for presentation, composes creative cuisine with South American notes. At lunchtime, diners can compose their own menu, while in the evening the chef is given carte blanche. A buzzy vibe reigns, thanks to the people skills of the hostess.

Mouton-Benoit
Modern Cuisine
€€€
This roadside establishment founded in 1822 was once home to the kitchen of ‘Mother Dumas’. For over 20 years the Mouton-Benoit family has been at the helm, regaling diners with a several-course surprise menu, crafted seriously and sincerely by the chef and his son, and loaded in generous flavours, while Madame graciously supervises the front of house. More concise lunchtime lineup.

This stately stone manor is aptly named. Inside, a certain Scandinavian simplicity reigns – with exposed stone walls, light oak tables and grey upholstered chairs. This is the first venture of a young couple of professionals who honed their skills in starred establishments: Mickaël Marcoux in the kitchen and Marie-Jeanne Rault in the front of house. Playing on the full spectrum of textures, the dishes showcase savvy combinations (green asparagus, buckwheat, smoked pike roe and wild garlic sabayon) and punchy flavours (stuffed morels, fregola risotto, vin jaune emulsion). Slick, polished servic
