Appel Thaï

€
Appel Thaï, a firm favourite with foodies, makes the most of its lush green oasis in Anderlecht. In addition to a buzzy, casual vibe throughout, the garden and terraces are sheer bliss in fine weather. The varied score is fully-fledged Thai, depicted by a fantastic mix of fresh, powerful flavours with a savvy blend of spices. For example: spring rolls stuffed with aromatic rice, cos lettuce, thin slices of succulent beef and soy sauce or spicy panang chicken curry with sweet-sour shallots and coriander. Affordable prices, lavish helpings and buckets of charm: it is just the spot to (re)sample

Cinq
Modern French
€€€
The young and not so young come here to be spoiled rotten in this contemporary villa near the ring road of Brussels. Chef Verzele rustles up a varied menu in tune with the zeitgeist, adding a new spin to his classical background. Examples include perfectly poached fillets of sole, paired with fried prawns, a velvety saffron-flavoured risotto and a knockout fish sauce. Cinq is the sort of place that invites you to dig into meals steeped in gutsy, big-boned flavours whilst enjoying the casual buzzy vibe. Should you have cause for celebration, we can recommend the lobster menu.

As you enter the lifestyle boutique, you will notice the snug restaurant at the rear leading into a pretty garden, where, as you sit on the patio, you may even be forgiven for thinking you’re in Italy! Chef Kayes Ghourabi soaks his recipes in Italian sunshine as recognisable Mediterranean aromas and flavours unfold and captivate our tastebuds. Examples include a pedigree vitello tonnato or a breast of duck with a hazelnut crumble and a drizzling of subtle cooking juices. Bang on every time and always open to new twists.

De Copain

Two mates, Michael and Niels, welcome guests to their aptly named joint in the heart of Dilbeek complete with a lovely garden patio. The pair, who does everything themselves, shares a devouring passion for produce-centric cooking. They cherry-pick all the top-drawer ingredients ranging from veg from local market gardeners to fish fresh from the North Sea, crafting them in an uninhibited, complex-free manner, strewn with inventive nods, like surprising textures and vibrant fermented flavours. For example, they may cook duck whole, serving it rare with a gutsy sauce and a cream of red beetroot a
