It is well worth driving the 60-odd kilometres from the centre of Belgrade to get to this fascinating property serving fine cuisine and excellent wines. The restaurant is situated within the Atelje Vina Šapat winery, amidst 12 hectares of vines. The dining room, decked in velvet upholstery and chandeliers, is elegant and classical with discreet modern touches, while its picture windows allow guests to enjoy sweeping views of the peaceful Danube, vineyards and surrounding lush green countryside. Talented chef Nikola Stojakovic brilliantly merges high-flying techniques he gleaned in some of Fran

The menu features fish from the river, including grilled zander and catfish fillets in white wine. Guests with a sweet tooth will enjoy rounding off their meal with a taške (a kind of jam-filled pastry) or a šnenokle, the Croatian version of the French île flottante.

Located on the edge of the historic centre, this restaurant boasts expansive picture windows that frame stunning views of the Sava River and the city’s contemporary skyline. Talented and passionate, youthful Marko Derić, back in Belgrade after honing his craft in several European restaurants, is now at the head of a creative, razor-sharp kitchen team. Marko’s culinary approach is rooted in Serbian traditions and produce, to which he gives a modern twist, drawing inspiration from French and Italian cuisines. Diners can choose between a range of menus: a five-course fish menu, a five-course meat

Tucked away on the outskirts of the city centre, the exceptional quality of this restaurant’s food makes the journey well worth the trip. Drawing inspiration from pedigree Serbian cuisine, it proudly showcases local and regional ingredients; most of the ewe’s milk cheese, for example, comes direct from the restaurant’s own farm in the Homolje Mountains. Among the house specialties, the shoulder of lamb matured in dry aging cases is highly recommended, as is the house-made Serbian bread. Hearty, generous portions.

The name pays tribute to the painter Adolf Waldinger, who was born in Osijek in 1843. Behind the Art Nouveau façade of the hotel of the same name is a bright, modern room with contemporary canvases on the walls. The menu relies on close collaboration with local farmers and producers, which ensures quality seasonal ingredients that well express the rich culinary heritage of the region. They range from the more robust flavours, such as vješalica, the pork chop stuffed with cheese and wrapped in bacon, to the more mouth-watering flavours of delicious desserts. Marked only by a discreet green sign by the main door to a residential building in northern Belgrade, you might miss this establishment if you don’t keep a sharp lookout. On the first floor you’ll find two dining rooms and a vintage-style lounge that is ideal to start the evening over an aperitif while a turntable plays vinyl records. Youthful chef Anđela ‘Angie’ Risimić, not yet thirty, is back in Serbia after learning the ropes across Europe and has taken over the restaurant where she worked prior to embarking on her globetrotting tour. She puts her international training, especially what sh
