This restaurant takes its name from the old Pyrenean tradition of log rafts, used to transport timber by river (there’s an exhibition dedicated to this traditional craft next to the railway station where the historic Tren dels Llacs also makes a stop). We were pleasantly surprised to find this restaurant, which embraces tradition from a more contemporary perspective, in so doing showcasing the so-called ‘Pallaresa nouvelle cuisine’. This simple yet pleasant eatery, with an open kitchen behind the bar, is run by a friendly duo of chefs, Clàudia and Jaime, who showcase their technical yet fresh

If you are a fan of mountain, river or even hunting tourism (in season), make a note in your agenda to visit this small town, and nothing makes the experience more complete than recharging your batteries in a gastronomic restaurant. In this family-run restuarant, whose name recalls the effect of the cold and wet wind that blows through the Catalan Pyrenees to become warm and dry when it reaches the Pallars Sobirà region, they defend the ‘Slow Food’ philosophy with all their might. The pair at the helm, with chef Zaraida Cotonat behind the stove and José Antonio Rodríguez in charge of the dining

This restaurant, occupying a small rural hotel in the Benasque valley, not far from the downhill ski slopes of Aramón-Cerler, is nestled is a truly enchanting natural setting. The couple in charge, Ainhoa Lozano and David Beltrán (with chef Víctor Manuel Ovalles in the kitchen), show consummate professionalism and enthusiasm gained through working with master chef Martín Berasategui. The dining room, with its open fireplace and fine views, is the perfect setting in which to savour intensely flavoured creative cuisine. The superb menus here, all of which offer really impressive value for money,

This restaurant, located in a village in the Benasque valley, has been in business since 1984 and is run by the third generation of the family – it is now overseen by the niece and nephew of founder Pilarín Ferrer with Iris Jordán at the helm in the kitchen and her brother Bruno in charge of the dining room and wine cellar. Under their guidance, the restaurant has had a change of direction with a focus on contemporary cuisine that seeks inspiration from tradition through the culinary influences from the valley and a more modern perspective. If you enjoy eating high-quality meat, you won’t want to pass up this opportunity. The restaurant occupies an attractive Alpine-style building, however its most interesting feature is that the same family runs the restaurant as well as a farm that breeds native cattle. Here, you can savour delicious homemade stews, wild mushrooms in season, as well as exquisite grilled meats produced from its own cattle, and game. Its veal is famous for having the perfect level of fat between its muscle fibres.

Carpaccio of tea-smoked Pyrenean venison, creamy mountain-style rice, wild mushrooms and quail, organic baby goat ribs and cheese from Taüll all feature on the menu at this restaurant with an attractive stone façade that blends in harmoniously with the other buildings on this main road. In the small dining room with a pleasant and welcoming ambience, enjoy cuisine that is steeped in Pyrenean tradition, albeit with a few modern and Asian touches added to the culinary mix. Options here include the à la carte designed for sharing, plus a surprise tasting menu.

El Niu

Located alongside a main road, El Niu occupies a stone house with an interior featuring traditional mountain decor, including an open fire, skis, snowshoes etc, plus a notable profusion of wood. The à la carte, traditional in composition but with added French touches, is enhanced by interesting daily specials that the female owner “sings” to every guest (traditional country pâté, leek pudding with a cep mushroom and black truffle sauce, pig trotter stew with snails etc).

Over time, this unpretentious restaurant, which takes its name from an iron pan that is typical of this valley, has developed into a culinary reference in the area. Its contemporary cuisine skilfully blends in harmoniously with more traditional dishes such as snails “a la llauna” and the hearty Aranese “olla” soup. Choose between the à la carte and two set menus: one attractively priced lunchtime option and a second more elaborate version called Garona.
