Gasthaus Zum fröhlichen Arbeiter

This spruce family-run inn has been welcoming diners for 100 years. Owner and head chef Hannes Tschida showcases his love for the Seewinkel region through dishes incorporating plenty of local ingredients. The wide-ranging à la carte options include Grammelknödel (potato dumplings stuffed with greaves), beef goulash, trout ceviche, dry-aged steak and Lake Neusiedl catfish. There is also a four- to six-course surprise menu. To complement the bold flavours of the cuisine, an impressive wine list dominated by Austrian labels is available. The restaurant itself has two indoor dining spaces: one ooz

The new project by Barbara Eselböck and Alain Weissgerber is not far from their other restaurant, Taubenkobel. The traditional character of this long-established inn has been deliberately preserved – the food being no exception. The handwritten menu includes dishes such as Tafelspitz, goulash and cordon bleu, not to mention the fantastic apricot dumplings! Although down-to-earth, the dishes impress with the high standards in terms of quality and craftsmanship ensured by Karlheinz Ruttmann. Previously chef at Freisinger Hof in Munich, he is a long-time friend of Alain Weissgerber and they worke

Barbara Eselböck and Alain Weissgerber offer a delightful alternative to Taubenkobel restaurant with this charming eatery located in the adjacent building. The atmosphere is friendly, relaxed and completely unpretentious, and the food is simply delicious. Select ingredients go into flavoursome dishes such as Alsace-style snails, Wiener schnitzel and gnocchi with fresh truffles. The interior is wonderfully cosy and has a vintage feel to it, with charming decorative touches and shelves displaying house-made and Pannonian food items, as well as regional wines. By the entrance, there is a counter

The name "Fossil" was not simply plucked out of thin air: This restaurant is actually located in a Muschelkalk limestone wine cellar dating back to 1870. At the entrance on the historical Kellerplatz, you are greeted by a plant-filled Mediterranean-style terrace. Then take just a few steps down, walk past the open kitchen and into the bright and imposing barrel vault, which makes for an enchanting setting. Chef-patron Thomas Daniel Pugel has been cooking here since 2015. Between noon and 9pm, he serves up regional and seasonal cuisine that is rooted in Austrian tradition yet incorporates moder

A thoroughly enchanting establishment! In a 16C townhouse in the heart of the city, dedicated hosts Susanne and Michael Pilz have created a cosy restaurant featuring beautiful vaulted ceilings and a truly idyllic outdoor dining area with trees, grapevines, shrubs and herbs. The chef-patron crafts regional and seasonal dishes with modern influences (think veal lights with brioche dumplings or sea bass with melted tomatoes and saffron gnocchi), the lady of the house expertly directs the service with warm hospitality. In addition to the restaurant, they operate café-bar 10 B, located on Rathauspl

Steeped in tradition, this restaurant in the centre of Podersdorf has been run by the same family for four generations. Their ties to the region are reflected in delicious dishes made with ingredients from the owner's native Burgenland. The handwritten menu features classics such as veal liver and schnitzel, as well as options including pan-fried Arctic char fillet with pak choi and celeriac cream. In summer, the courtyard behind the house is especially inviting, with a spacious gravel terrace shaded by trees. The estate's own wines are well represented on the menu. The establishment also runs

Incorporated into the Bio-Landgut Esterhazy, an estate with its own farm, this restaurant has a laser-like focus on regional and seasonal ingredients. Local produce, some of it organic, is used in pleasingly uncomplicated yet sophisticated dishes, for example wild cheese sausage, baked schnitzel, organic Angus beef steak and venison carpaccio. In addition to the well-curated à la carte menu, a five-course set menu (dubbed "Hofmenü") is available on Fri and Sat evenings. Tables are arranged in a converted stable that has been beautifully modernised – the ceiling with beams is lovely. The terrac

Located in the architecturally striking Scheiblhofer The Resort hotel, this stylish modern restaurant is nestled amid the vineyards. The glass-walled dining area affords stunning views while you savour contemporary cuisine with a Pannonian twist. The menu features dishes such as hamachi sashimi with caviar, apricots, passion fruit, yellow pepper, leche de tigre and maize, or Pannonian pike-perch bisque. The property also boasts a winery, Weingut Scheiblhofer, and wine is also an important part of the experience – the impressive selection naturally includes many of their own making.
