Mélisse

Modern French · ★★ Michelin

$$$$

Since opening in 1999, Chef Josiah Citrin’s flagship has been a Santa Monica mainstay. Through its many evolutions, the restaurant has sought to offer a certain kind of fine dining experience that will never go out of style. Slip in through a discreet side entrance to enter the enclosed space that combines a vibe-y underground feel with classic luxury. One can expect the finest cutlery and plates, gorgeous presentations, plenty of tableside saucing, and a level of French decadence that borders on gratuitous. The results are indulgent. Truffles, wagyu, uni, and crab weave their way across intri

Although located in the same building as Chef Josiah Citrin's sister restaurant Mélisse, in lieu of its sibling’s tasting menu-only format, the offerings here afford more choice, with a modest prix-fixe alongside à la carte options. Chef Ken Takayama's cuisine sends forth signature combinations of French technique with an abundance of California's seasonal produce, focusing on updated takes on classically rooted flavors with modern, global touches.Spendthrifts will revel in the opulent caviar and truffle add-ons; but even without a dollop or shaving of luxury; the impressive cooking here, such

Colapasta

Italian · Bib

Run, don’t walk, to this charming spot. Nestled into a breezy locale just a few blocks from the Pacific, this modern trattoria packs a big culinary punch, thanks largely to the considerable talent of Chef/owner Stefano De Lorenzo (of Piccolo). On the highly focused Italian menu, expect to find a fragrant soup of the day; a few heartwarming antipasti; as well as a fair amount of beautifully executed pastas, made by hand at a station located front and center in the space. Favorites may include tender calamarata, tossed in a smooth and bright tomato sauce, dotted with oregano, creamy stracciatell

Cobi's

Asian · Bib

The pink building with green trim is the first sign that Cobi's will charm you, and then there's the dining room, where frilly, floral touches (Pink wallpaper! Mismatched tables and chairs!) and a patio with more flowers set the scene for a lively atmosphere. Discover Thai and Malaysian delights along with other influences on this broad Southeast Asian menu. Start with dumplings, satay or curry puffs, those crispy triangular shells filled with curried split peas and potatoes sided by pickled onion and tamarind ketchup. From there, pick a curry or a wood-grilled main dish such as grilled prawns

It would be easy to write off this rooftop haunt as just another trendy spot, but that would be a shame as the gorgeous space comes with some serious kitchen talent. The cactus garden is a lush perch, but ocean views from the sunset room, replete with natural word and stone, are unbeatable.Contemporary small plates infused with Southern Mediterranean influences is what this team does best, and diners would do well to share. Dishes deliver deliciously surprising flavors, as in a rich whipped eggplant spread served with olive oil in the center and fresh-baked puccia bread on the side. Rigatoni v

The Lobster

Seafood

$$$

True to its name, this lovely perch overlooking the Santa Monica Pier has earned its reputation for great American seafood thanks to its focus on Maine lobsters and much more. Don’t let its beachy location lure you into thinking that this is a tourist trap, though. Tightly spaced tables don’t leave much room for privacy, and the service seems focused on efficiency, but those expansive views and steaming seafood more than compensate. Lobsters arrive at the height of temptation — find them beautifully steamed until the meat is tender, rendering that side of melted butter all but superfluous. Sea

Rustic Canyon

A sense of community and warm hospitality pervades this beloved Santa Monica institution where the lighting is just right and where the bar and booths exude intimacy. Open since 2006, the restaurant has gone through many chapters and evolutions, but one guiding, foundational principle is a commitment to market-driven cooking. The menu today proudly acknowledges the farmers and producers behind every asparagus, chicory, persimmon and fish. The cooking is far from fussy. Think hearty pork terrines with pickled cauliflower, poached trout with sauerkraut, bay scallops with tomatoes and saffron, an

Chef Dave Beran’s Santa Monica bistro is irresistibly charming, a breezy space buzzing with activity and accented with wood beams, exposed brick and gleaming white kitchen tile. Brioche with chicken liver mousse and shallot truffle jam or bay scallops with green garlic beurre blanc reflect an unapologetically French approach. There are a number of dishes intended for two, and the pressed duck is the pinnacle of luxury. Should there be room to spare, chocolate soufflé paired with vanilla ice cream or a strawberry tart with whipped cream make for a sweet sendoff. No time for a full meal? Take to
